Caucasian Spotted Fritillary

Turkish Name : Kafkasyalı İparhan Kelebeği.

Distribution in Turkey: Eastern Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia.

Distribution in the world: Turkey, the Caucasus-Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran.


Living Area: Alpine and subalpine grassland. Above sea level, up to heights at about 800-3,000 meters. Flowery grasslands; grassy openings in areas.


Flight time: Depending on the height, a year developing a generation or two. Late June-late August.

Food Plants of the caterpillar: Caterpillars, especially Mullins plantain (Verbascum spp.) and Plantains (Plantago spp.) type feed.

Description-Notes: Typical locality: Transcaucasia - Caucasus. Similar to Spotted Fritillary, with which it reportedly hybridizes. Note that submarginal spots above are often crescent-shaped not rectangular or rounded, especially on hindwing. On underside of hindwing, some blackened veins are often visible, especially as they cross orange postmedian. band; in other spotted Fritillaries these veins are yellowish.

Wingspan: 40-44 mm long.

• Lesser Spotted Fritillary – Melitaea trivia ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
• Aetherie Fritillary – Melitaea aetherie (Hübner, [1826])
• Persian Fritillary - Melitaea persea, (Kollar,[1849]
• Desert Fritillary - Melitaea deserticola, (Oberthür, 1909)


Origin of the name: Interrupta (Latin) - intermittent, torn. The name is given by figure lower side of the rear wings.
