Wild Turkey
Infos from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a large gamebird, one of two species of turkey.
Adults have a small featherless bluish head, a red throat, long legs and a dark body. They have a long dark fan-shaped tail. Their wings are a glossy bronze. As with many other species of the Galliformes, they exhibit strong sexual dimorphism. Males have red wattles on the throat and neck and are significantly larger than females at 117 cm length compared to 94 cm. The males typically have a "beard" made of modified feathers sticking out from the middle of their breast. In some populations, female turkey may also have a beard, but it is usually shorter and thinner than the males.
The breeding habitat is wooded areas, usually with clearings, across most of the United States and parts of southern Canada, where they are permanent residents. They nest on the ground at the bottom of a tree, shrub or in tall grass.
Male birds display for females by puffing out their feathers, spreading out their tails, inflating the wattles on their neck and drooping wings. Males are polygamous, and they form territories that may have as many as 5 hens within.
Wild Turkeys forage on the ground or climb shrubs and small trees to eat berries. They are omnivorous, eating acorns, seeds, berries, roots and insects, sometimes snakes, frogs or salamanders.
They are relatively weak fliers and will escape on foot if possible; at night, these birds roost in trees. They are capable of achieving speeds of 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour) in flight.
Only the males "gobble"; the females yelp. The males also emit a very low-pitched drumming sound. This bird was Benjamin Franklin's preference as the national bird for the United States. It has been adopted as the official game bird of South Carolina, Alabama, Oklahoma and Massachusetts.

Hi Sebnem!
It is worth posting for sure! Turkey from Turkey ;-) I love dark mood and red colours of head. Definitelly kind of photo which I like very much! Not too dark for me, with great composition with turkey emerging from darkness. Great work my friend!

Hi Sebnem,
It's a good portrait, perhaps the extra shadow was intentional..you know, to hide his good looks :) I did a workshop, but not real happy with the results. Perhaps this one is better left in the subdued lighting ;-}
Well done & Thank You.

Hello Sebnem,
Very good shot! I've never liked this birds, but they look pretty odd what makes pictures of them interesting. I like the colours here though the picture is too dark for me because the eye is hiden in shadow.

I like contrast and colors.

A very nice "approach" to show us this vulture.

İyibir kompozisyon, ışık değerleri mükemmel.
Tebrikler----------------------------------
Osmanlılar zamanında Mısırlı tüccarlar tarafından İngiltere'ye götürülüp satılan kuşa muhtemelen oralarda, Türklerin yaşadığı memleketten gelen anlamında "turkey" denmiş.
------------

Hi Sebnem,
These are one of the most bizarre looking creatures, he looks as if he's had a couple of hours with the Star Trek makeup people :-) I think technically it's too dark, however on the artistic front the light and shadows work extremely well, the tonal contrasts and colours you've captured are excellent. Details are excellent and nicely framed. Very much worth posting!

Hello Sebnem!
Amazing portrait of this fantastic "beast" ;-)))
Just great close-up with fantastic dark BG.

Hello Sebnem,

A wonderful capture of this wild turkey, excellent lighting, details, colors and BG.

I have seen wild turkeys today myself out in the corn fields near where I live.

They have increased in numbers over the last few years in this part of Ontario, I even mistook a large group of them for deer last year, until I downloaded the shots and zoomed in to find turkeys... :-D

Great job, thank you for sharing!

Hello Sebnem! Yes, this was very worthwhile posting, it is a striking portrait of the wild turkey! I live near marshland in Ontario Canada and wild turkeys have been reintroduced here so we see them frequently now. Love the black background with just the hint of red to mirror the head--gorgeous composition. Very well done! Thank you, Linda

Hello Şebnem,
Very nice portrait.I liked contrast between BG and face of turkey very much. Thanks for sharing this unusual work with us.

While looking at this picture in retrospect, I realize it is absolutely pointless to try a workshop on it. The image is perfect in every respect and even the slight noise in the BG adds to the sum total of the beauty of it. I have great respect for Howard for his professional acumen, but even his effort to improve on it has left me unimpressed.
Great work that truly reflects your abilities and aesthetic sense as a photographer, Sebnem.

Hello Sebnem,
I like the play of light on this wild turkey. Very fine portrait. Cheers

This is an amazing portrait, such beautiful detail, color and lighting. It inspires me to include sometimes into one of my paintings, so I saved it in my favorites - hope you don't mind.
