Sand cat

[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I took this photo at a zoo. When I visited there, Sand cats were not on public display. Fortunately, one of the zookeeper kindly offered to show me a non-public section so I could see these cats of the dunes. They were behind the thick glass and the reflection was hard to avoid.
A distinct characteristic of Sand cats would be their broad head with large ears set low down on the side of their head. This is believed to help a cat to present a low profile when hunting in barren areas, and also to protect the inner ears from wind-blown sand. Their fur is pale sandy brown to ocher, a little darker on the back and whitish on the belly, chest and lower muzzle. They have long hair between the pads of their paws and it covers the pads, protecting them against hot sand.
Head and body length: 40-57cm
Height at shoulder: 25-26cm
Weight: 2-3kg
Their distribution range is from northern Sahara, Arabian Peninsular to western Asia.
They prey on birds, jerboas, hares, reptiles and locusts. |
