[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)

This image was taken under very harsh winter light conditions with the sun high behind the hawk. With the background and sky washed out by the light I had to concentrate on the detail of the birds head excluding all else. I managed to capture two images of this bird, the one posted and one as it flew away!

Welcome to TN, with a great opening shot! Unusual viewpoint, perfect focus and well-balanced exposure. All I can suggest is that you make the most of the 800px size limit - this great shot could have been posted larger and would have had more impact.
Best wishes, Nigel.

Hi Chris,
Good compo. Great close up. Beak and eye are sharp. In yours truly's humble opinion is the light evaluation also positive...
Update: Very welcome indeed!

Hi Chris,
Very unique composition, with fantastic colors and details, a winner for a first post. Welcome to TrekNature and thanks for sharing.

Hi Chris,
what an excellent debut to TrekNature.Red Tail Hawks are very common to the area where I live. They are fairly difficult to get good photos of because once you are with in 30 or 40 feet of them they fly off. This weekend I'm going to get me a new zoom lens that can aid in my getting better shots,an 100-400mm is just what the doc ordered as so many pictures taken and posted to TN are in that range.I wonder what was this bird doing at the time you photoed it?Like Merlin has said you could have posted it in the full allotted size for more impact. Bob

Great image Chris and good thinking to crop in those light conditions. Welcome to TN. Cheers, Rob
