Red-tailed Hawk captured summer 2004, with my old 300D @ 400mm, handheld. This hawk was looking on something on the ground. I saw him from a car and photographed from road.

Red-tailed Hawk - Buteo Jamaicensis
Buteo jamaicensis) is a large Buteo which breeds from western Alaska and northern Canada to Panama and the West Indies. Males are typically smaller than females, generally weighing between 800–1100 grams and measuring 45–56 cm in length. Females typically average between 1100–1300 grams and measure 50–65 cm in length.

This is one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the Chickenhawk. It is the most common North American hawk.

Identification Tips:

* Length: 18 inches Wingspan: 48 inches
* Sexes similar
* Short, dark, hooked beak
* Large, broad-winged, broad-tailed hawk
* Immatures have notably narrower wings and tail, and appear slimmer
* Dark patagial mark on underwing, present on all ages and races, is unique
* Blocky translucent area in outer primaries
* Flies with a dihedral
* Extraordinary geographic variation

Hi Ralf
Well presented hawk with great details & colours.

Hello Ralf , very sharp and good colors and contrasty but little whitish specled due from oversharpening I think ,TFS.

Hi Ralf,
A very bright and nice picture from your hand. I like the characteristic expression of the bird's head. Very well captured. Beautiful natural colors and good details you shows us. Good job.
Regards, Ruud

Hello Lukovic,

A wonderful shot of this great raptor taken from the side view! He looks like he was posing for you!

At the first glance I thought the bird is placed too central in the frame but at a second glance, the long tail and wings compensates this very well! In the end I found your composition very good. The empty space in front of the hawk is enough to let him breath! The gradual sharpness fading in the background adds a good perspective and also isolates the subject very well! I appreciate there were no distracting blades of grass between the lens and the hawk. A very nice presentation!

The rich colors look natural and well saturated! Maybe a bit too much but they definitely look better this way in the picture!

The strong contrast in your picture seems to add a bit to the sharpness! It emphasizes every detail very well! It also is a necessity for such a dark frame!

Excellent exposure to capture both highlights and shadows properly! I think the sun was high in the sky and this might have been the only thing to create difficulties while exposing! You nailed it correctly! Even the area around the eye is well lit! Excellent job!

Focus was achieved with precision and the DOF was very well handled to make the hawk stand out!

An outstanding job! Well presented even for educational purposes! The brief note completes your post! Thank you for sharing!

Hello Ralf,
What a fantastic photo. Beautiful colours and sharpness in a great composition.
I think the hawk shows a better advantage without the thick black frame. But that's personal.
