Ah, yes, it's the quills that gave away the identity of this once beautiful animal, but that's all I will say for now. Hopefully some other members will still come around and scratch their heads.

As with all road-kills it is always so unnecessary and a pointless waste of life. The solution is really very simple. If all road users who travel in those areas where animals normally or regularly frequent or where it might be known to be active will only apply a little more caution and pay a bit more attention of what's going on around them then this sort of incident never needs to happen. It is so sad.

Well spotted and captured in this post to remind us all of our responsibilities, to curtail our travelling speed, and to take note of animals small and large. Not just for their safety, but also for the sake of our own safety.

Hi Jay,

Yeah,sometimes you see not so funny things along the road,I have seen many victims here as well,if you drive a bit slower and pay a bit more attention,the hitting chance will reduce a lot but will I suppose never be nill,In the ws I will post a picture I took about a year ago in wintertime when I was out for a walk,I dont know if it were carcases hunting leftovers or maybe a kind of feeding station ,but it did not look/smell that nice,things you want to forget quickly,

Hi Jay,
this reminds me somewhat of my unpleasant reality picture in that the subject deals with the death of an innocent creature in this case what appears to be an unfortunate porcupine.We have porcupines here in High River but to date I haven't any pics of them.Your photo has good detail,colour and focus and it gets the reality of it out very well.The one thing that bothers me is it could of been deliberately hit by the motorist as so often happens with gophers here in the High River area,but of coarse we will never know for sure.Thanks for putting up this thought provoking picture as it serves to remind people that care needs to be exercised for the sake of all living things so this doesn't have to happen as much as it does.This week here in Alberta we lost three grizzly bears and that is a real shame as they were hit by locomotives. Hi Jay,
Six feet is a long way for this poor porcupine to have dragged itself. Your point is well taken, I drive over 100,000 kms a year and do occasionally hit the odd bird, rabbit or gopher, and I feel terrible everytime and I always insure they do not suffer.

what a big feast that must have been, amazing what one can find on the side off the road when looking closer that to the next corner.
Well captured, very interesting seeing this resting place .. and now I would not have guessed.

The remains are of a slow moving, tree climbing and bark eating friend of the great outdoors. Just another clue to your photos id.
