Okay it's not March and this shot could have technically been alot better. Nevertheless, I'd heard this Snowshoe Hare(Lepus americanus) running about in the undergrowth a few minutes earlier and thought it to be a squirrel .....

.... And then, all of a sudden and to my surprise - it comes charging straight at me, and then at the last moment it changes direction and leaps past me in the air. I thought a fox must have been after it but there was nothing else in the vicinity.

Then I remembered that old idiomatic phrase 'Mad as a March Hare' which is based on documented observations of peculiar behavior within this genus particularly in or around the breeding season in the Springtime. And so a documented image of this phenomenon is presented here. You can also see well the rather large hind legs or snowshoes and for which it acquires it's more popular name.

Hello Derek

WOW ! times to times in the net i see photos
of hares in this flying pose but it is the first
one I am seeing one on TN or I don't remember
have seen one before !

This is a GREAT SHOT, you superbly frozed
that hare in mid-air, focused superbly,
and I see that you where at ISO5000,
with great work at that high ISO setting,
as I have wrote you with DSLRs of today we
don't have to worry about higher ISO settings
and if it is necessary go with high ISO setting.
The eye-contact is wonderful and the catch-light
it is rendering it more beautiful, TFS

Hello Derek,
Anyone can take a good photo of something stationary, but to capture a subject as fast as this hare in mid air is a real challenge. It may not be as sharp as you would have liked, but it is still a wonderful capture!!

Hello Derek,
WOw..very lucky to have caught this jumping hare even if technically the picture is not perfect as you write. But very impressive and vivid shot taken in a natural surrounding.. I like a lot.
Kind regards

Hi Derek,

A very good action shot, taken well, good detail and colours. Who was surprised most you or the hare?
You sure were quick on this one.
TFS regards Bill.

Hello Derek

Looks like you caught the hare just as it jumped in to the frame. The spring in its jump evident by the straightened body and extended hind legs. A terrific action shot considering the circumstances.
