|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|A Fin or Finback Whale, the second largest animal on the planet. They come to the North Atlantic in the summer months for vacation & more importantly to fatten up on the rich herring stocks that this region is known for. They can grow up to 90ft long and weigh up to 74 tonnes. |
Photographing them, I can only liken to a game of 'whack a mole'. They surface for a few seconds for air and then go under, where they will surface again is anybody's guess and should you happen to be on the right side of the boat and on the good side of the sunlight and no other watchers in your line of sight - you 'may' get a photo op. Then there's the issue with constant salt spray and the boat constantly moving and swaying. Birds on the wing are a breeze in comparison.
Species: B. physalus
