Eastern Fox Snake (Elaphe vulpina gloydi)
Photographed at Point Pelee National Park, Ontario

-80 - 140 cm
-Yellowish brown with alternating dark brown/black blotches down the back, alternating circular blotches on the sides
-Belly is yellow with dark squarish markings
-Woodlands along lakes and marshes, also inhabits farmlands
Conservation concerns, distribution and status:
-This species has been persecuted because it is often mistaken for the Massasauga rattlesnake because it vibrates its tail when threatened
protected by the Ontario Game and Fish Act
--Rare and local in parts of southwestern Ontario and in southeastern Georgian Bay

Hello Nancy! It is not very often we see snakes elevated onto branches in this area, so your photo is of great interest! Great POV. You have captured the many textures of the fox snake's skin, smooth and shiny on the head, rough elsewhere. Very enlightening notes, we have the Massassauga down here in Wainfleet and didn't realize the two were so similar. Hope your description will help in preservation. Well done! TFS! Linda
