The Pine Grosbeak, Pinicola enucleator, is a large finch. It is the only member of its genus and represents an ancient divergence of the ancestors of the bullfinches (Arnaiz-Villena et al., 2001), diverging perhaps a dozen mya during the Clarendonian. Given that the radiation of the bullfinches (which are only found in Eurasia) and the mountain finches (also closely related: Marten & Johnson, 1986) started approximately at the same time in the interior of Asia, it is possible that the Pine Grosbeak evolved in North America; possibly, its ancestors were wind-blown individuals of a proto-bullfinch which arrived via the northern Pacific as at that time the Bering Land Bridge was widely inundated.

Female Pine GrosbeakAdults have a long forked black tail, black wings with white wing bars and a large bill. Adult males have a rose red head, back and rump. Adult females are olive-yellow on the head and rump and grey on the back and underparts.

Their breeding habitat is coniferous woods across Canada, Alaska and the western mountains of the United States, and in northern Fennoscandia. They nest on a horizontal branch or in a fork of a conifer.

This bird is a permanent resident through most of its range; in the extreme north or when food sources are scarce, they may migrate further south.

This species is a very rare vagrant to western Europe.

These birds forage in trees and bushes. They mainly eat seeds, buds, berries and insects. Outside of the nesting season, they often feed in flocks.

The Pine Grosbeak was depicted on the 1986 series Canadian $1000 bill.

Hi Marie,

This is such a pretty bird and your close-up is wonderful. Beautiful colors, details, and textures. The usual dirty beak - but this time with snow. He looks verrrrry cold.

Jane

Bonjour Marie,

bravo,
amicalement,

I suggest several sessions at weight-watchers and to cut down on the fatty sun-flower seeds! ;)
This is a tremendous capture of this very plump (though probably just fluffed-up) Grosbeak!
The eye-contact is superb.
Great POV that is right at the same level as the bird.
Gorgeous colours and lighting.
Great exposure.
Magnificent work Marie.
All the best,
Joe

Hi Marie,
Nice detail, color, DOF, and exposure here..
Well composed, and the Grosbeak is looking at you. The snow on the beak is a nice touch too :)
Howard

Bonjour Marie,

Belle capture de ce durbec, tu nous le présentes avec d'excellents détails dans son plumage tout gonflé. Travailler avec la neige n'est pas toujours facile et ici tu t'en sosrs très bien , les couleurs du durbec sont très naturelles. Bravo!

Lise

Hi Marie,

He looks like a very cold little fellow. Te colours are amazing, he's almost purple. The detail in the feathers are great and the pov shot on - you much have been pretty much lying down in the snow! A shot definitely worth getting cold for.

Mike

Merci!

Hi Marie,
Well I can see someone is feeding this little bird quite well! :o) Cute shot, great POV and really nice natural coloring. TFS
Donna:o)

Well, Marie, this seems a fitting subject for a $1,000 bill. Wouldn't mind seeing one of those :)

Very attractive coloration here, and you present it admirably. You have pleasing sharpness and detail, nice depth-of-field control. The white balance on the snow is great. You might perhaps have cropped more from the top of the image -- it's arguably either slightly overexposed or more border than you really need at the top, given the lack of detail thhere.

Great point of view. Great note.

Warm regards on a cold day,
Jim
