The Warrior

When I saw this close-up of a grasshopper in my viewfinder, I was amazed by all the details that could be seen on such a small creature. It reminded me the armor of a warrior. To show all the fine details I had to use my 55 Micro-Nikkor lens in reversed position on a Nikon PB-IV bellows.

Lenses, even most macro lenses, are design to have a short distance on the bayonet side and a long distance on the filter side. When you go beyond life size magnification on film (image of subject on film is larger than the subject itself) it is important to reverse the lens around to keep optimal resolution. We often have to do this with most lenses mounted on a bellows. Exceptions are bellows lenses which are of course designed for that purpose.

Technical data:

Camera : Nikon F3
Accessory-1 : Nikon PB-IV Bellows with reverse adapter for the lens.
Lens : 55mm f/3.5 Micro-Nikkor
F/stop : Not recorded
Shutter speed : 1/60 sec. (flash synchro speed)
Magnification on film: about 3X life size
Tripod: Manfroto
Filter: None
Flash : Braun F-34 (2 units)
Accessory-2 : double cable release
Film : Kodachrome 64
Flatbed Scanner: Epson 4180

Hello Alain,
this is a wonderful close-up shot with excellent sharpness, colours and light.
I love makro-shots to look at and to make.
Perhaps you are interested in my close-up of a dragonfly and a hornet.
I hope you have more of those phantastic shots, realy perfect, thanks

I just love these extreme close-ups. The details are sharp and the DOF fine. One could consider diffusing the flash in these instances to get rid of the white spots. A white piece of paper or a tissue would do it. Very well done.

That's quite a close-up Alain, I really like the picture, something I've never attempted to do. Sharpness is excellent, great background colors. Congratulation on your silver star.

Your dear brother

Voici un close-up très impressionnant. La netteté est superbe et l'exposition ne pourrait être mieux. Le cadrage très serré met bien en valeur l'insecte qui se détache aussi merveilleusement sur le fond flou. Bravo.

Amazing job, Alain. This is a stunning shot of the grasshopper. Just stinning clarity. I also want to thank for the information on the reversed lens, because I'm thinking of exploring that.
