Hello friends, the American Woodcock.

1/2000s f/5.6 ISO1600 85mm (35mm eq:127mm).

From the National Audubon Society website :
http://birds.audubon.org/species/amewoo

« The American Woodcock’s plumage is cryptic;
the complex pattern of brown, muted yellow,
and light grey looks like leaf litter. The unmarked
under-parts are a dull orange-yellow. Woodcocks have
short legs, long bills, short tails, and stout bodies that
appear to have no neck. The woodcocks’ eyes are large and
set far back on the head, which allows feeding birds to see
in all directions and in low light, even with their heads down. »

Merci.

Asbed

Hi Asbed. This picture shows him off well. I might mistake him for a leaf. Nice to see this. Now I might be able to spot them easier. TFS Trevor

Hello Asbed,
Nice photo of this American Woodcock. Not very good camouflaged this time. good sharpness and beautiful natural colours. A pity, that horizontal branch just above the head of the bird.

Hello Asbed,
It's always a pleasure to view one of these odd looking birds. I saw many this spring up at Magee Marsh and was able to capture quite a few photos.
I have yet to view their unique mating ritual dance which I've heard takes place just before dark, when the male flies high in the sky and comes spiraling down.
A wonderful shot of this beautiful woodcock as it sits quietly on the forest floor.
