[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
Well we are back from our vacation in Waterton Lakes National Park. We had a great time and hope to share some of the images I took while there.
This first one is of a Black Bear that grabbed a spruce tree when his back got itchy. It was sure comical to watch, hope you like it.

General Description

Like us, most bears are omnivores, consuming both plant and animal matter. In early spring, they eat horsetails (Equisetum spp.), blossoming dandelions, grasses, roots and tubers and any carrion that they encounter. In summer, berries attract them, particularly Canada Buffaloberry, abundant in wooded areas along river valleys and in the foothills. In fact, 90 percent of their diet may be vegetation. They also eat huge numbers of insects, such as larva in rotting logs. In autumn, they feed ravenously on anything edible, putting on a thick layer of fat before going to sleep for five or six months.

They do not hibernate as some winter sleepers do. True hibernators slow down all their vital processes: breathing almost ceases; heart beat slows to only a few per minute; body temperature drops to or below freezing, and it takes them many hours to wake up. The bear sleeps more like us, and can waken almost instantly, as has testified by those who have accidentally broken into a den. Remarkably, although totally inactive, their bones do not weaken, they do not have to go to the bathroom, and a mother bear can give birth to two or three tiny cubs, looking after all their needs for several months without ever awakening.

Hi, Rick! How have you been?
Hope your Wharton outing went off well.
Going by this sneak shot of an itchy bear, you surely must have had whale of a time.
The picture records a moment in a bear's life not seen frequently. It is a wonderful capture.
Your camera settings, however, bargained for a little OE here and there.

Hi Rick.
I see you really had a nice trip. Your meeting with black beer is fantastic. I hope 600 mm lens was so suitable for such meeting :). You managed to catch a very impressive moment. Scene is very natural and attractive and quality of the shot despite the special light condition is great. My compliments and TFS.

Hello Rick,
this is real. How far can one go to the bear?
this is enough to show its being and its surrounding. Such a real wilderness.
It is quite humurous also to see the pose of the bear.
Nice sharpness and good contrast indeed.

Hi Rick,
For a little while I couldn't figure out what the hairy animal was, not the best shot of the bear, but certainly a well depicted image showing the way of life for bear and its motive. When I have an itch, I grab anyone or anything.
Must be fantastic just to sit there and observe.

This is a great image of a bear giving himself a good scratch. I love the way his white spot is exposed on his chest. A nice action shot. This would have also made for a good video subject. I hope you're not working to hard these days.

This photo is great, I really love it! I have seen giraffes contorting themselves to get a good scratch, Impalas rubbing their bottom against thorn trees etc etc

But a bear is really a good catch! Thank you for posting it to TrekNature!! (Where you in the car, when you took this photo?)

I see you photographed the animal in the morning at 07:13 having a ''wash'', I wonder if they do this every morning?

Your notes are great, did you mean the female gives also birth when half asleep?!?
