I think angybone is sending me her parsley thieves... so far I found two feasting on my parsley. Nothing to get upset about as those mean eating machines turn into such beauties.

Caterpillar of black swallowtail butterflies are various shades of green, with narrow black bands on each body segment. The black bands are interrupted by yellow-orange dots. The caterpillars, which can reach 2” in length, consume leaves and flowers of various plants in the carrot family including parsley.

This species spends the winter in the pupal stage inside a chrysalis. Adults, which are black with yellow markings near the margins of the fore and hind wings, and more limited blue and red marking on the hind wings, emerge in the spring and seek a host plant on which to lay eggs. The caterpillars have a forked, glandular process behind the head that can be everted to emit a strong odor distasteful to predators.

Hello Sky,
I wish we had such caterpillars feeding on our parsley. You can make swallowtail caterpillars show the forked glandular process (osmaterium) by gently stroking behind the head. It is usually orange in color.
Great POV and composition and most of the caterpillar is pretty sharp.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hello Sky nice work lovely colour and clarity close composition is nice, DOF well achieved tfs rgds Necip.

Hello Sky!
Fantastic capture with amazing colours and details. I like the composition too.

Well, he stopped off here to eat some parsley on the way to Canada. I will post mine tomorrow.
Very nice POV. Sometimes it's hard to tell which end to photograph. You did a good job with the focus considering the dark conditions. It seems these caterpillars are always in the shade when I try to photograph them also. It's hard to get a fast shutter speed. Nice composition! (I would try to adjust the contrast just a little to give more light). The rain drops are a nice touch. You know if you had tickled him he would have shown you his orange osmeterium, but the smell is not so good.

Hello Sky,

What a colorful and great picture of this caterpillar... The only thing maybe is that it seems to me that you cropped a little bit too much around it... (caterpillar too closed to the frame).

Great position of the head towards the camera (excellent POV) and great use of the flash... I like the little water drop we can see on its body!

Great job and TFS!

Hi Sky

You are so right, these "mean eating machines" do "turn into such beauties". That's when they become such beautiful flying machines, but they (the caterpillars) also have their own remarkable beauty and as long as they are displayed in such a well captured shot we can enjoy them, but it's obviously a different story when the are devouring our veggies or prized plants.

Great macro work with at least the frontal half of the insect showing excellent details. I like the dew drops clinging to its side and I was rather surprised when I noticed that the photo was taken at 7 o’clock (early evening) which seems to indicate that you had some early dew or a spell of rain (unless it was the garden sprinkler that caused it). The composition is nice with the caterpillar spanning the diagonal, the colours are well saturated, the DOF attained good details at f/18, and the exposure with the fill-in flash was well managed.

Good work and TFS.

Hello Sky Fa!
We often see the butterflies but seldomly - the caterpillars. Thogh unpleasant to have this fellow in the garden, it is pleasant to see it in your colourful capture.
Congratulations and greetings!

Hello Silke,
This is an attractive diagonal composition, and your little green friend is well depicted!
Super details and textures in the insect, and it looks like he's really enjoying the meal!

Hi Sky,
amazing macro over this guy! The way it can hide with those colours is great. I like how is it looking at the camera, its really funny. Good details over this bug. Good note, also!
well done, TFS
have a nice day!

Hello Sky,

Superb picture of this caterpillar. Very nice composition. Good POV, DOF and focus on the head. Very nice light and colours.

Hallo Sky
This is surely a nice fat caterpillar, which you managed to capture very closely and with great sharpness. The detail is very clearly seen and you where lucky to capture this worm so close. I like the lime green colour and the yellow and black patterns and textures on the caterpillar. It reminds me of calligraphy writing. The dots on the end of each segment of the body and especially the nails well displayed. The eyes are great looking and very captivating. Well seen and captured. Thanks for sharing, and have an enjoyable day.
Best regards
