This female Barrows Goldeneye and ducklings was out for a swim on Lynnett Lake in Waterton.

Barrow's Goldeneye
Bucephala islandica
General Description

By Andrew Slater

The Barrow's Goldeneye is primarily a bird of the Pacific slopes of Canada, in British Columbia and Yukon. A number cross over the mountains, however, to breed on the Alberta side.

This duck spends the winter on inshore waters of the Pacific Ocean, and arrives in the Rocky mountains in May. It departs in late September, after which several individuals usually spend the winter on the Bow River in Calgary, among the much more numerous Common Goldeneyes.

Another diving duck, the Barrow's Goldeneye eats the larvae of damsel flies and dragonflies. It will also consume crustaceans and some vegetable matter.

The nest of this goldeneye is in a tree by a secluded mountain lake or pond. It uses a tree cavity, often an old woodpecker hole, and lines it with down.

Hi Rick,

A very sweet picture of this family. I can see why they are called Goldeneyes. Mama's eye is wonderful. She seems to be smiling. Nice colors and details in the dark water.

Hi Rick,
quite a interesting duck, the head of the adult bird looks huge and a bit out of proportion. Not sure if we have them here in Ontario, never seen one, but that does not mean they not out there.
Lovely family portrait with good sharpness and nice detail.

Hi Rick,
a nice family portrait of this unusual looking bird..i've been away from TN for a little while and you've had some great posts, i'll try to catch up! I'm off to bonnie Scotland tomorrow so i''ll be back in week!
hope you're well,

Ils sont vraiment mignons avec maman qui est très nette.

Hi Rick
This is an adorable capture, I can't say I've ever seen this species before. I think the movement of the water gives the impression of a bit of noise but still a nice family portrait.

TFS Janice

I was in your area last week on our canoe trip. We survived a terrible rain and wind storm last Monday...I'm sure you got it too. We survived and the rest of the trip was just great. We pulled out at Echo Dale Park on Thursday.
