These teasels, captured last March at the end of winter are a common sight along roadsides and the edges of fields in the winter time.

Common Teasel – Scientific name : Dipsacus fullonum – Family : Dipsacaceae. The variety of teasel with lilac flowers was native to Europe but naturalized in North America. The dried flower heads were used to raise a nap on woollen cloth and was thus useful to the Mennonites of the farming community just west of here. A blue dye made from the dried plant was used as a substitute for indigo. It was also traditionally used in treating skin diseases such as scabies.

Thanks for looking, and please forgive my extended absence. It will be a few more days yet before I can be properly active here.

Thanks for your kind messages.

Hi Silke,
I like very much this clean presentation.
It's so good the composition made with the branches above the snow, and its shadows.
The frame used really improves the appreciation of the scene.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Silke!

You present us a very nice composition and interplay of shapes. The idea to compose your picture with vertical and horizontal liones is very smart and makes your picture outstanding.

Kind regards

Hello Silke,
very artistic shot of these Teasels.
Those blue shadows are beautiful.
You show immense skill in exposing due to the fact that 1. Snow is very hard to expose.
And
2. To expose snow correctly without under exposing darker objects is even harder.
Yet you have succeeded in doing so perfectly!
I salute you ;)

Pin-sharp, full of details and great clarity.
Very well done,
Joe

Hi Silke,
What a wonderful photo. So good to see that much snow and still so fresh. I whish......
The funny thing is that I know that it is cold, but both the dead teasel and the sun make the feel of this photo very warm. Love the cool shade and the minimalistic composition.
TFS,
Niek

Marking for tomorrow...hey did you know that snow looks a bit blue for a reason? I have been studying this question for a few days now..

Water, snow, and clouds really have no particular color of their own. They appear blue colored because of the way they scatter the sunlight that contains all the colors of the rainbow. The oceans and the atmosphere scatter blue light the most because of the small size of their molecules.
...and
"only painters and photographers generally ever notice or "see" it. The French Impressionists were sensitive to true colors like that..."
Wow..So now you know the rest of the story.
Bob

Hello my friend Silke!

This is a simple but beautiful composition with good perspective!
the light and shadlow plays a big part on the whole composition.
very well done and composed

Hello Silke,
One doesn't think of shadows in the snow as being blue, but they really are!
Great composition of these teasels in the snow with excellent sharpness and exposure and superb ligting of the early spring: something to look forward to!
Well done and thanks for sharing this beauty.
Nice to see you back in action, even if it is partial at the moment.
Ivan

What Joey wrote on exposing in snow was my first thought too about this shot, you did an outstanding job! This is one of the best I've seen in snow close ups. TFS

Hello Silke,

I just love this! The artistic simplicity is very appealing! It is so clever how you have retained the pattern of three - two teasel stems and a shadow!

Nicely framed!
