These are just a few of the Canada Geese that over winter in our area. Our electrical generating plant uses natural gas fired steam turbines and the warm water discharge keeps a portion of the South Saskatchewan River open year round. For years now we have had approximately three thousand geese, and a few ducks and mergansers that choose not to migrate. The Canada Geese and Mallard Ducks feed in the grain fields surrounding our city then come back to the river for the night. These geese are lifting off due to my intrusion. In the background you can see the Cottonwood Trees that line the river through our city.

Hi Rick

An amazing natural scene - it reminds me of the crane sites in Japan and the Ouse Washes near me (there are approx 6-7,000 overwintering swans)> This is one of those shots that conveys (to me at least) the excitement of approaching a wildlife habitat.

Hi Rick.
I guess it is very nice to see a lot of Canada Geese. Some of them pass near to my town when they fly south in winter.
Great photo Rick

Hi Rick, this is a fantastic rest area for birds in winter! I like the layered composition and the nice, natural colours that is your hallmark. I can hear the birds calling and the sound of their wings flapping. That's a sound that I just love. Thanks and thanks for the interesting note as well!

A breaking of every rule known to "book photographer"...ha! Look at what you get for being creative and good, not well read. It gets you amazing work. You are breaking out of the mold of books, rumors and modern myths...This is one Tres cool picture Rick. And I am being tongue in cheek here, but there are so many places to look..yet it is all interesting. This would look great full page in a book or magazine...super shot...

Hi Rick,

I think that even more than 3000 Canada Geese over winter in our area. The flocks are huge. The waterways don't freeze here, and snow is rare in the Willamette Valley. That is one species (along with snow geese), that is not threatened. Except for the snow this could have been taken here. I know I have driven through Medicine Hat and I am trying to remember the surrounding area. Had I known you then, I would have paid more attention! Your photo gives a hint. I'll have to go look at a map. I'm not sure how far you are from the beginning of the Rockies.

Hello Rick

A very unique Winter Oasis of sorts. It is actually interesting and fortuitous for the creatures who may need a respite from the Winter's cold.
Excellent POV the geese are packed in along the edge of the ice like politicians at the public coffers.
