I miss these guys so much, but they will soon be crawling out of their dens with hungry bellies and some with new babies born a month to two months ago. These are the Black Bears of Waterton Lakes, this one a chocolate colored bear was captured doing what they love the best in summer, feeding in a saskatoon berry patch. This high caloric diet packs on the weight which helps them make it through the winter. Last summer my son Cody and I found what we thought to be an excellent den site. So this weekend when he was down to Waterton he located and photographed the site for me, so I will post it a workshop. Now I don't know for sure if it is in use, but I would like to think so, just the thought of one of this great animals asleep in this nice spot gives me great pleasure.

Hello Rick,
I like the expression very much in this fine portrait of a Brown Bear. He contrasts well with the natural green BG and the lighting, composition and sharpness are excellent.
Thanks for sharing this fine image,

hello Rick

they are the pointing dogs, they point on the gane birds
that they smell, and there is the pointing bear,
what a lovely image Rick with that great pointing action
of the bear, the excellent luminosity of your image,
excellent POV and framing, TFS

How often do you see these? Are they a common sight like a Deer or a rare sight like a fox?
All I know is that you get immensely good shots of them!
Razor-sharp with lots of detail.
Nice warm, rich colours.
Great work Rick,

I must do some studies more on these Rick. We are going up to our wilderness location in April for a few days of image taking. I know there are black bear up there and cinnamon as well...I have not seen this colour in one before...I don't feel good enough with my ID'ing bears and I do know that even in Ferry County we are 1 county away from grizzly...That is the one I hear too many story's...more than make the news...my son is going to AK this year to fish for Salmon in an area where Kodiak Bear dominate.....Unpredictable animals..even the black!

This is a great capture of this fellow? checking you out. We will be going to Waterton in June this year. I hope we get some good bear shots as well. It must be nice to be able to send out a personal scout ahead of your trips. : )

Hi Rick,

A beautiful shot of this Black Bear. I love the look on his face - could that be a smile?? Rich colors and excellent details. The setting is lovely. The workshop is fascinating. Something must be living in there for sure - wish you could find out what.

Oh Rick, love that picture. I don't know why but the fact that these animals feed on berries touches me so much. I wish I would visit bears with you and Lucy in this wilderness and learn not to be scared of them. I love this picture for the face details, the big chocolate nose sniffing and pondering at once. The lip curled and the eyes looking far... makes me wonder what's going on in this big brain. I am also impressed by the picture in the workshop, really looks like a den... maybe the bear snores! Thank you Rick, so happy to have you back with those wild shots of nature!

Hello Rick,
Beautiful animal.
The expression is so bearish:-)
Besides terrific light and good integration in the green leaves and grasses...
Well done!
