A female Northern Cardinal seen in Burlington. The snow was actually the start of a major snow storm - I finished shooting just in time to get home safely!

This cardinal and her mate were more tame than other cardinals that I have encountered. A friendly stranger offered some seed and that was enough to keep them close. This photo was taken as a few mallard ducks temporarily scared the cardinal away from her seed.

On interesting, and perhaps cute, fact about cardinals is their feeding behavious during mating. The male will often feed the female even when they are in situations where she could just as easily feed hereself, such as at a feeder.

PP: I processed the RAW with an eye to sharpness, increased the contrast and removed a tiny twig near the bottom that was very distracting.

Hi Josh,

I like this beautiful bird and you got her well. The circumstances were hard I guess. Nevertheless a great shot. You sharpened it a bit to much I think. But that's my personal view. I like it more a bit soft focus.

regards,
Zeno

Great, what a beautifull picture !!

Very good sharpness and colours

Hi Josh,
looks like you been down to Hendry's sanctuary?
Excellent composition, the pose is absolutely beautiful. Superb sharp details and the colors of the cardinal stand out on this grey back ground.

Hi Josh,
In Quebec, we are living this major snow storm right now! We don't see anything at three feet in front us; this is the never ending winter :) This is a beautiful composition with this elegant and lovely lady. IMHO, it looks a little too sharpened as it created some noise but the picture remains beautiful. Thanks,
Claudine

Hello Josh,
Great close up, excellent composition and pov, beautiful colors and superb details, fantastic sharpness and depth of field, great pose.

Hello Josh,
Lovely capture of the female Cardinal in the snowstorm. I like her pose and the lovely colours. Great focus too and a fine soft background. A beautiful composition too.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Josh

Great to see this female with the snow falling, very effective. Maybe she knew what was comng and was looking for somewhere to shelter, I'm sure many birds perish during such events.
Excellent composition, great exposure and excellent sharpness. Good POV and background too.

Chris

This is beautiful Josh. I love the pose and the composition with the thorny twigs and berries, and of course the falling snow. The head does look a little over sharpened on my monitor too. I touch of very low opacity blur tool on just the over sharpened areas would fix that. I wouldn't touch the nice sharp eye or beak or edges though.

Hello Josh

very beautiful shot of Lady Northern Cardinal, with a lovely pose
of the bird, excellent POV and vertical framing like the subject's pose,
lovely luminosity of the image and the female cardinal's colours,
excellent sharpness & details and that snow flakes
coming from the sky are a plus to this wonderful image, TFS
