[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Noticing large birds swooping across our window, I looked out to see 8 of these turkey vultures perched on the peak of our barn. The stayed for about 5 minutes, then flew away in intervals. They circled high in the air over the fields. Oily and bedraggled, they still serve a vital purpose in cleaning up carrion. This was a zoom shot, from about 90 feet away into the morning sky. Not a good shot, but such an unusual occurrence. Don't they look every bit as ominous as their reputation?
Turkey Vulture: cathartes aura. Length 26-32 inches, wingspan 6 feet. Large black bird, bare red head, long tail, holds wings in V when soaring. Habitat: various land habitats, especially around dead trees. These are also called Turkey Buzzards.
