Libellula lydia, The Common Whitetail/Whitetail Skimmer.

This dragonfly is comomnly seen around ponds, creeks rivers and lakes.
Although books say they use branches and reeds as their lookout, here, on Manitoulin Island, they are often seen on gravel, dirt etc. Go for a walk on a trail, you will encounter many just sitting, like in this pic. There were lots of reeds and cattails, but these fellows sat on the ground. Interesting.

One of my favorites as they are beautiful with thick muscular abdomens. This one pictured is a male. The females are often misidentified since they resemble the female Twelve-spotted skimmer, both have brown wing tips, yet the common whitetail is abit smaller.
Unlike most dragonflies, the female Common Whitetail lays her eggs by herself, dipping her abdomen in the water without the male attached.

It's kind of strange seeing this on rocks, Mike, but I like the effect. Strong compostion; I like to see these lovely things centered.

Very nice shot Mike,
Great details, colours and composition. I'm not too keen on the BG, it hides the detail of the wings.
Thanks for posting, have a great weekend

Very cool shot, Mike. Sharp details and good colors. I really like the way you can see the pebbles through the transparent wings. Well done. TFS. : )

Hi, Mike
Good capture ! This is a nice kind of bg too.
BTW, I'll be in Quebec in mid July(remember you told me I should head up North when I last was in Mass. ?). I am hoping to shoot quite a few north american insects then.
Cheers
Philippe

Beautifull insect Mike. I know how hard to capture and shy. Good details and sharpness. I like BG, looks like nature's puzzle ;-)

Hi Mike, nice shot. Good details here, DOF selected well. You may find that they will bask on the ground under a certain ambient temperature, when the heat is ample then they will use the perches more often. Nice composition, almost B&W! Well done.

Hi Mike,

It's a nice macro with good details and good DOF. The exposure is good too. I like the unnatural BG a little bit less. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter
