hi Folks , today I have this photo of a Common Redpoll to share , I captured this one on Saturday morning an hour or so after my last upload. the call I heard when I looked out for it I guess could be described as a trilling , it was not one of the few calls I do recognize... I believe this bird is migratory here in this part of Canada , as such is one of several that I have noticed around town. , the red area on its head and neck is determined by how much berries is in its diet. if it is berries this little fellow likes , than I am thinking it will be having some stiff competition from the waxwings which I had noticed a few of the day before...

this one basically flew up and landed right in front of me I took a burst in continuous low speed shooting , and it hopped up and flew away , too bad I was in single focus lock mode had I been in continuous I may just have landed an in-flight :( as it where the one I did get in-flight was out of focus..... oh well maybe next time , lesson learned...

a special thank you to Asbed (CelticRanger) for correcting my ID of this fellow which I thought was a house finch. the Redpoll is a type of small finch , I believe the level of red displayed is still relating to how much berry is in its diet , but am not quite as certain now :-)

thanks for stopping in

hello Art

very beautiful photo with the fine POV and vertical framing,
beautiful luminosity, excellent sharpness and details,
the catch-light render the photo more beautiful,

Hi Roberts,
Different and beautiful bird.Colours is very nice.
Tanks for sharing.

Hello Art
I think it is a Common Redpoll, as mentioned by Asbeb. It is very beautiful passerine bird species, like House Finch. especially reddish part of its front and throat show it very pretty. You captured it with a great capture. superb colors, grat focus and POV. eyes contact and composition also great. thanks for sharing, well done

Hi Art,
it is most definitely a redpoll finch and I,m glad to know that they are here this year. This species is an Arctic species and is irruptive in nature and they are only seen this far south if the food supply is not good way up north. The pose is good and so are the colours and if there is an area that could be better,it would be a sharper focus, however I know that resizing can soften up images that are otherwise sharp.A fine late winter light has given us a wonderful little bird to view.A D300 is a new camera for you,how do you like it?Thanks Art,now I need to find one of these little guys to photo as well,I like 'em. Bob

Redpoll is a handsome bird, Art, and you have taken a lovely shot of it. Your description of the shooting experience is amusing and strongly reminicent of my own experiences :).
Good POV and framing. The focus is pretty sharp. I like that red colour on the head and the chest.
TFS and regards.

Hello Art,

This is a little gem, we don't have anything like this is Queensland, if we did I would be chasing them all over the place, beautiful shot of this Common Redpoll, wonderful colours in the plumage, excellent eye detail, framing and composition all perfect, really nice work t.f.s

Cheers Rick :)

Hi Art,
your Redpoll looks exactly like ours.
You have captured very nicely, it's well exposed with nice natural colours. I found it a wee soft.
I like the pov and the light in the eye.
Well done.

Art, Wonderful shot and brilliant focus. The bird seem to be in a very sober mood. Lovely view. Ganesh
