Northern Hawk Owl
Surnia ulula

I was out in the foothills today on another adventure and came across this Northern Hawk Owl. He was perched on top of a pine tree scanning the ground for lunch.

The Northern Hawk Owl is a medium sized owl with a long tail. His face is white with a black border and wings are short and pointed. His crown and forehead are dark with many white spots and his under parts white with heavy brown bars.

The sky today was filled with ice crystals which created a grey background. It's the first time I've come across this species of owl. He was interesting to watch and to hear his call.

I'm dedicating this image to John (ubc64) and Kathy Reasbeck for their love of birds.

Dear Janice!

The Hawk Owl is very impressive. I like its pose and the powerful view very much. Your composition with the bird sitting on the top of a tree highlights the majestic impression that emanates from the bird. I also appreciate your concise and informative notes.

Kind regards

Hi Janice,

Kathy and I appreciate your dedicating this photo to us. As you said, we do both love to watch birds. Often, we don't really see them properly until a good photo is taken. The one you have presented is indeed one such capture. There he is at the top of that pine tree looking for any small creature that moves. When it does, he'll swoop down, with his hawk-like wings, diving into the snow, if necessary, to grab his meal. We enjoyed being able to view your excellent photo of a Northern Hawk Owl very much!

See you,
John

Hello Janice,
I have never seen this particular bird before. It certainly resembles a hawk and an owl in one body. Excellent detail and exposure with beautiful natural colors. Very interesting bird of prey indeed!! TFS.

Hi Janice,
Wow! This is a beautiful speciec, I'm always envious of others who get to photograph owls. They are an amazing looking animal. I have been doing a lot of research on owls in hopes to find them more frequently so far it has paid off as the last time I went out we discovered 3 owls in one night. I would have to say the hawk owl is probably the most streamline sports edition of the species, it is gorgeous and I hope to find this one at the end of my lens.

Hi my special capricorn friend janice:)
