[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A female Black & Yellow Garden Spider can be seen waiting patiently in her web & in the late afternoon sun. Although their looks appear dangerous complete with that telltale alien or E.T. face markings on their
abdomen - they are considered harmless to humans.

These spiders inhabit the lower 48 of the United States, Hawaii, southern Canada, Mexico, and Central America. They have distinctive yellow and black markings on their abdomens and a mostly white cephalothorax. Males average in size from 5–9 mm (.2" to .35") while females from 19–28 mm (.75" to 1.1").

Garden Spiders build webs in areas adjacent to open sunny fields (the case here) where they stay concealed and protected from the wind. Webs are usually constructed from between two to five feet off the ground & is very distinctive. It's form is of circular shape up to 2 feet (60 cm) in diameter, with a dense zigzag of silk, known as a stabilimentum, in the center (clearly seen in this image).

The purpose of the stabilimentum is still a matter of much debate. It is possible that it acts as camouflage for the spider hiding/hunting in the web's center, but it may also act as a lure for curious insect prey, or even warn birds of the often difficult-to-see web.

Yellow garden spiders breed once a year. The males crawl about in search of a female & once locating her will build a small web near or in the female's web. He then commences courting by plucking/agitating strands on her web. Often, when the male approaches the female, he has a safety drop line ready, in case she attacks him. After mating, the male dies, and may be eaten by the hungry female.

Hi Derek,
Wow you are getting so good with that Macro lens. I like the in the spiders face POV. It's pretty nice that you captured the web as well, it doesn't always happen. Good DOF on the legs and nice blue background. I don't see ET, I see Bullwinkle the moose, I guess it's all in how you look at it. Well done.
Denis.

Hello Derek

Hello Derek,
You seem to like spiders..this one is very impressive and you present it with a colorful and powerful shot. I'm not so fan of these creatures, but I have to admit that they can be very photogenic. Very well presented against the blue sky.
Kind regards
Anne
