Hello friends, first of all
I want to dedicate this photo and
this experience I lived today alone
with the Great Gray Owl to our friend
Ivan (Argus) and wishing him to live the
same experience in the North of Sweden
with European Great Gray Owls.

When I arrived at that forest other
photographers where already there,
the Great Gray Owl was perched on a tree,
15 to 20 minutes the other photographers
they went (they where there earlier),
I stayed up to 2 hours alone with this
great bird waiting him to take his flight,
and 2 hours later place to the spectacle !

From one dead tree to another dead tree,
from one tree branch to another tree branch
the Owl was following the field mouses that
are in tunnels under the snow.

One time the Owl start his attack always his
glance on the ground, I shot in burst mode,
this is among that series of photos, but he
did not attack in the snow and instead went
to perch on a dead tree at man's level.

Today the light was not at the rendez-vous.

from Canadian Museum of Nature website

« The Great Gray Owl is not known
for its agility in flight, but hunting
is not a challenge. Its preferred method
is known as "still hunting", in which the
bird sits and listens for its prey, then swoops
down for the kill. It will fly rarely, except for
short distances between perches, and it usually
flies only a couple of metres (6 ft.) off the ground
Because of their excellent hearing, Great Gray Owls
are able to hear prey such as small rodents moving
beneath snow a foot deep (30 cm). When they swoop
down they can break through a crust of snow strong
enough to support a large, adult human! »

Georgeous shot Asbed. You couldn't ask for a better shot of this owl in flight. Your burst mode worked wonders here. I love the POV and the DOF for a perfect backround. I love how well it contrasts to the background. A very errie feel to it. Very good work. TFS Asbed

Grazie della condivisione.

Hi Asbed,
This fabulous photo was really worth the 2-hour wait - this is TRULY an excellent in-flight capture. The crop / composition is perfect, too, just like sharpness, DoF and exposure. Hats off of you. Bravo. Thinking about the title a bit: I think you're as silent hunter as the Great Gray Owl. Majestic pic.
Best regards, László
