Hello friends, the Merlin
protecting his prey. Here is
the History of this photo :

- First from far I saw a flock of
black birds taking off from a tree.

- Then I saw an American Crow
flying and perching to that tree.

- And from the ground I heard
a bird launching his cry.

- I went to see what is happening
and I saw it is this Merlin
with his wings wide open.

- while I was doing my approach
I questioned myself why his is
letting me to approach and he
is not taking his flight.

- I taught he was injured, and start
to ask myself what to do if he is injured.

- I did my approach from 7 to 10 meters
and did this photo at that distance
(here I have also give 80% of cropping).

- And I was surprised when this Merlin
take-off and at his claws I saw a Starling,
in the action surprised from that thing
I shoot the photo of the take-off
and flight but missed the focus,
so that photo I am keeping it only
for me in my archives as a souvenir.

Edit 14 April 2013 : I changed my
mind and I decide that, that photo also
deserves to be seen.
Here Is the link.

- And in the flight I saw the crow
chasing the Merlin to try to take
the prey from his claws.

1/4000s f/5.6 (photo shot
in Manual mode), ISO1000,
50mm (35mm eq:75mm) and
up to 80% of cropping.

from the All About Birds website

« A small falcon of northern forests
and prairies, the Merlin is the least
well-marked of the American falcons.
It is becoming a regular breeder
in urban areas.

Breeds in open country from open
coniferous woodland to prairie,
occasionally in adjacent suburbs.
Winters in open woodland, grasslands,
open cultivated fields, marshes,
estuaries, and seacoasts. »

Merci

Hello Asbed,
How exciting it must have been to walk up on this attractive falcon in it's natural habitat and be able to capture it with your camera. The photo turned out very well showing excellent detail and beautiful natural colors. This type of encounter doesn't happen too often, you were very fortunate. Congratulations!!
Ron

Hello Asbed.
This is an amazing shot from sneaky photographer. You must be pretty close to the subject in getting this shot with fine details. Lovely natural tone and well done indeed.

Nice capture Asbed!
Yes that's what this Merlin is doing!
The POV is great and taken with top sharpness and natural colours in an area that seems to have had a fire, and that makes it more visible.
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan

fine capture of this Merlin protecting ist prey. I like a lot the story of this picture in your note. Nicely camouflaged in the natural surrounding and still a good quality despite your 80% cropping.
