Don't get me wrong ... Banff is a very cute place and the surroundings are unbelievably beautiful. It was our first encounter with the very impressive Rocky Mountains. Still we think Banff is some sort of tourist trap. In Banff there are so many tourists, each day of the year, that you can't give it another name. ;)

This scene was shot from the parking lot of the Banff Gondola. The mountains visible in the picture are the Rockies.

Banff: - source: Lonely Planet

Banff townsite was created solely as a tourist destination. The Canadian Pacific Railway wanted a health spa here to attract wealthy, well-travelled Victorians who would arrive -as paying passengers- on CPR trains. And come they did, ready to relax in the rejuvenating hot springs or hire one of the many outfitters to take them up the mountains.
In 1912, the decision to allow cars in Banff opened up the area to people other than rich Victorians, and the town began pushing its boundaries.
Banff continues to face conflicts over its growth. Many people complain that the townsite is too crowded and argue that more hotels and streets should be built to accomodate all the camera-clicking tourists. Others think there's far too much building already. To control growth, the government has decreed that only those people who can demonstrate a valid need (such as owning a business) will be allowed to live in town. But that doesn't solve the problem of what to do with all the tourists!

Banff Gondola: - source: Lonely Planet

The Gondola zips you to the 2285m summit of Sulphur Mountain in about 8 minutes. An observation terrace, restaurants and a historic weatherstation are on top. The Gondola's lower terminal, adjacent to the Upper Hot Springs pool, is just about 4 km south of Banff on Mountain Avenue.

Canadian Rockies
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The Canadian Rockies comprise the Canadian segment of the North American Rocky Mountains range. The southern end in Alberta and British Columbia borders Idaho and Montana of the USA. The northern end is at the Liard Plain in British Columbia.

Contrary to popular misconception, the Rockies do not extend into the Yukon or Alaska. North of the Liard River, the Mackenzie Mountains, which are not part of the Rockies, form a portion of the border between the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

The Canadian Rockies contain five national parks:
Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Waterton Lakes & Yoho.

Fantastic scene Pieter, this is one of my must see places and hopefully soon. Great colour, clarity and accurate exposure on the sky. My only nit is the sky/land is a little to 50/50 for me but I understand this was from the car park. The tree on the left nicely frames the shot. 6/10 Very nice shot and informative post. Well done.

What can I say!!!?? This looks like heaven!
Beautiful Beautiful shot! I can imagine this hanging on my walls. ТFS!

Hi Pieter,

Excellent shot and well done on tyhe composition and details.

Don't complain, you saw why it's a tourist attraction, you were one of them. Which means you are a statistic to Banff. LOL

Hi Pieter,
This is very beautiful photo!
The composition is perfect, excellent DOF and POV, very nice colour. I using the same len for landscape, it did good job.
Well done and thanks for sharing!

zou daar zeker ook eens willen lopen met camera op zak.
je foto nodigt me daar toe uit zo mooi vind ik hem
groetjes Lia

Hi Pieter:
A fantastic compositon! The mountains are beautifully framed by the trees in the foreground. The colour and clarity are excellent.
Very well done!
Thanks for the heads up on Banff. If I ever make it out to that part of Canada I will look for somewhere off the beaten path to visit.

Another very nice landscape Pieter,
I like the clouds and the colours of the trees. My only nit is the tree on the right side of the frame. I find it a bit distracting and would have cropped it a touch to remove it. Still, what a stunning view from a parking lot.
Have a great weekend, thanks for posting

Interesting caption and an excellent photo. I like it very much. The colors are great and the composition is just right.

Great capture Pieter. Picture perfect. Thank You.

Nice scene Pieter. The mountains in the BG and the autumn coloured trees in the FG, all come together to make it look superb. No wonder it is a tourist haven. Well composed, stunning colours. Good job!

What a superb and interesting landscape that you have well captured ! My prefered kind of landscape. Mountains and trees are wonderful, but too much sky in composition... Thanks for sharing Pieter.

Hi Pieter,
A superb composition. The color and detail are perfect. The photo has such a beautiful depth to it. I bet this would look great printed in a large size. Great Shot!

This is a wonderful landscape of the Rockies, Pieter.

There are so many amazing, out-of-the-way places that you can see, just as majestic and less crowded. (Of course it helps if you have a son who is an avid hiker/camper.)

I had been in Banff in 1976 and what a difference to the visit I made in July! I did not stay this time for the reasons you mentioned. Beautiful of course, crowded definitely, worth seeing...YES!

Thank you for rekindling my memory of the west coast, and the great posting.

Well, Pieter, this is a painting.

Excellent composition dof and pov. When I checked the picture, I thought you had used someting like f/22. But f/14 was really enough.

Lovely colors, perfect sharpness.

This is excellent landscape Pieter. So sharp, detailed and colorfull! For me only one slightly disturbing thing is tree in centre. It had to be great trip for you!

Peter, this is a fantastic landscape. I like it. Great colours, excellent sharpness, a brillant composition. Well done.

You did make the most of your holidays, Pieter. I like this landscape but have to agree with Stephen on the 50/50 issue. Besides that it's excellent. Very well done.

Hello Pieter!
What a nice landscape. It's at postcard quality.Colors,POV,details, everything is perfect. Thanks for sharing.

Pieter the Banff village is a tourist trap, but once you are up in the mountains, it's a spetacular view at all corners, air that is incredible. This is extremelly well done, compliments Pieter.

Hello Pieter!
Magnificent landscape.Autumn colors are amazing.I liked POV,DOF and composition also. Thanks for sharing.

Aren't you a "camera clicking tourist"? LOL!!
Great capture, Pieter, you got good contrast in the clouds this time. I am amazed there was already yellow in the trees when you were there.

Beautiful landscape! The mountains are so beautiful!
Congratulation bye Tom

Hi, Pieter.
Nice landscape. Beautiful colors and composition. Ecxellent DOF.

Pieter, I expect I owe you a few critiques and here's another one I missed. Really good exposure on this one, helped by the fairly dark clouds and the sun behind you. Not 100% about the composition, maybe it would have been better to move the horizon up and crop the top of tree on the left even more. Of course, maybe the car park was just below the bottom of the frame so it might be the best you could do.
