North American River Otter

The River Otter can be found in both fresh and salt water, and can grow to three or four feet long. Their think fur protects them from the cold waters of the ocean.

Their diet consists of fish, crayfish, frogs, birds, crab and occasionally aquatic plants.

Predators such as Coyote, Raptors, Bobcat sometimes prey on River Otters.

Their life span is eight or nine years but up to twenty one years in captivity.

You might find River Otters in ponds, lakes, rivers, marshes and close to shore in the ocean in Canada and the United States.

The Otter was once hunted and trapped almost to extinction but through conservation and re-introduction their populations are slowly increasing. However habitat destruction and water pollution still put the otter at risk.

Hello Janice,
This is one animal you don't see every day, and you photographed them quite nicely. Looks like the one on the left has just caught a fish and still has it's tail sticking out of it's mouth. Great job on the exposure despite the bright light you had to deal with. I have only seen a few in my entire life, you were very fortunate.
Ron

Wilderness at its best, Janice.
The Otters seem to be oblivious of your presence and are well captured in their natural habitat.
Thanks.
Ram
