Ammonite (Placenticeras meeki)

It looks like a piece of art, yet this exceptional ammonite fossil is also a precious example of Alberta's prehistory.

The 71 million year old ammonite was donated to the Royal Tyrrell Museum.

This kind of ammonite is well known in southern Alberta, but this specimen is the most spectacular in appearance ever collected in the province. Measuring 62 centimetres in diameter, it's also exceptionally preserved and nearly complete, including the shell margin or aperture where the animal's head and tentacles protruded. Ammonites were hard-shelled squid-like marine animals that were abundant in the oceans during the Mesozoic Era.

Hope you like it.

A beautiful fossil Stephan, great colours and texture to this picture. There is nothing to gauge size in the picture so I am glad that you have told us how big it is.
Thanks for sharing.
Michael.
