Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks

Location: Banff National Park, Near Lake Louise, at the end of Moraine Lake Road, AB, Canada, UTM: 11U 556974 E / 5686584 N

Vital Statistics: Elevation: 1910 Metres (6,265 Feet)

Formation Mechanism:

Topographic Map: 82n08 Lake Louise

Description: This lake is one of the Rockies true gems. Formerly on the Canadian $20 bill, it has been formed by a landslide from the surrounding Tower of Babel. This material may have been transported some distance atop glacial ice and deposited here. Scientists still debate whether it has any connection to a moraine.

Moraine Lake has become known as “The Jewel of the Rockies”. Each year in June and July, melted ice washes particles of glacial silt, or till, into the lake. This “rock flour” absorbs all colors of incoming light except those in the blue-green spectrum. The result is the water’s breathtaking, almost surreal, turquoise color. When the lake is empty of silt, it returns to a normal blue color.

Superbe paysage les couleurs et la prise de vue sont excellents. Félicitation ceci est très agréable à regarder.

Merci pour l'envoie!

Beautiful view Stephan! You've picked a very good POV for this IMO. The turquoise blue water and sheer peaks make a wonderful landscape setting. Tasteful border that accents well. Excellent note explaining this phenomenon..Very well done!

Hi Stephan,
A stunning landscape shot. The portrait framing with the tall pines in the foreground is superb. Clarity of the air and DOF are amazing here. A great shot. Print it, frame it, and hang it up!

Salut Stephan!

TFS.

Stunning shot of this wonderful lake and mountains, Stephan!

I have been to this place many years ago, it was a wet and gloomy day, and I owned no camera...

Beautiful POV, details, colors, lighting and note.

Thank you for sharing you well composed, sunny image with us.

Hello Stephan. A beautiful scenery that you are presenting well in this photo. Great natural colors, and a lovely light. A lovely clear, wonderful landscape.
Regards, Krzysztof.

It's fantastic view. Soft blue tones of sky, very nice classical mountain background with glaciers and color of water is just amazing. I'm only thinking about these firs(?). Maybe it's better to do this photo with 3 trees, because there is not enough room for four. At the moment they can take attention away from photo - they switch on thinking about foreground composition.

Hello Stephan
A superb shot - the color, composition and sharpness are brilliant. I've seen several posts of lakes with this blue green color, but your note contains the best explanation of the phenomenon.

I wanna be there:)))) !!!!
marvellous colours, POV and framing.
It`s brilliant photo.
TFS :-)

Excellent shot! The turquoise water may look like it's oversaturated to people who haven't actually been there, but I know it's 100% real! What a stunning shot and the position from where you shot the lake is great. I liked this lake better than the more famous Lake Louise and you?

TFS!

Regards,
Pieter
