Bald eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus)

Order : Falconiformes

Family : Accipitridae

Diet : Carnivorous , feeding principally on carrion, fish, ducks and small mammals.

Reproduction : Sexually mature at 4 years. Mating and egg laying occurs between March and May. The 1-3 eggs are incubated by both the male and the female for 35 days. The young fledge after 72-75 days.

Longevity : Up to 20 years in the wild and 48 years in captivity.

Predators : No natural predators.

Status : Not at risk.

I took some shots of this bald eagle that was standing on this branch near the ground. I was alone in the giant aviary with 4 of these guys while suddenly they all started to scream like crazy, so I continue to shot and then I realize that a truck was coming near of the aviary. It was feeding time, they just start to scream while hearing the truck. Pavlov was right !!!

Oh yeah... herring was on the menu that day !!!

So I am back on track. I took a break and went to the Zoo of St-Félicien in the superb region of Lac St-Jean in Quebec to get some shots of North American species living in their natural habits. The Zoo is open during the winter and you will get to see in the next days my pictures of the following animals : polar bear, red fox, river otter, wolverine, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, Canada lynx, cougar, coyote, snowy owl and bald eagle.

All pictures taken in the snow on a beautiful clear and sunny sky, but cold day (-15°C or 5°F).

So just stay tune, and enjoy !!!

Beautiful picture Stephan!
Nice pose against the snow!

Hi Stephan,
Good to see a post from you, it's been a while. A beautiful eagle. The light here is very soft. Beautiful colors, and the detail is very sharp. I like the long shadow he is casting. A great pose.

Bonjour Stephan!
