[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Sympetrum species are mostly small red dragonflies abundant as adults in the late summer and fall. The nine species are especially common in marshy lowland habitats.
Ten segments on the insect's long abdomen give it flexibility to bend into the unique "wheel" position formed by a mating couple. Males, first reach the pond or stream, engage in territorial disputes, flying up together in a furious whir of wings. A female is attacked upon arrival by would-be suitors. The dominant male grabs her head with an appendage at the end of his abdomen. The two fly in tandem, while the male transfers sperm to his upper abdomen. Finally, the female curves her abdomen up to receive the sperm, forming a two-insect loop. The male protects her as she lays eggs in the water, probably to ensure that his sperm is not displaced by those of another suitor.

tres belle capture sky

Nice shot of the mating of odonatas!
Not sharp as needed, but still a nice photo!
Good POV!

Well captured Sky,
Good detail, colours and sharpness.
Composition and exposure are good. Good POV and framing.
Thanks for posting, enjoy the rest of the week.

Merci """JP

What makes this shot interesting to me are the many textures and forms found here that frame the insects. Nice work, Sky!

Sky, what a... lovely shot.

Great pov and composition.

Your note teaches a lot. Thanks for sharing.

P.S.: I added your picture to a theme of mine.

Hi, Sky.
Excellent episode from nature. And in very interesting surroundings.

Hallo Sky,

Hi Sky
You're right the scale is smaller than my mating lions, but the action is not less impressive.
Your composition and presentation is good and so is your note. Exposure was well done although colours can probably do with a bit of saturation. DOF is good while it could do with a little bit of sharpness.
Well done and TFS.

Seems like hard work! Good clear shot!

Hello Sky,
I'm running late today, but well deserved :-)
Thank you!

Hi Sky.
Very esthetic picture. I like all in this: colours, composition, dead nature and live -quite live- dragonflies.
Great shot!

Very good macro Sky!
I would have tried to keep all wings free of the frame but this is a great view. It is like we were their size looking at the from a profile like this. Very original!

I know how differcult it could be, to got them for the lens in a good position.Personal I think that a flash had done a very good job by the photo, I think the sharpnes can be done better then, the composition is very nice, with a good dof, very good job anyway.

very nice photo, i have hope i will make some of this with my camera

By the way what a great moment you had getting the dragonflys picture mating. It helps to appreciate also the insects as living creatures
