What is a Lichen ??

A lichen is a symbiosis. That means that it is two or more organisms living together such that both are more successful within the partnership than they would have been if they were living on their own. With lichens the basic components of this partnership are 1) a fungus called the 'mycobiont' and 2) one or more algae and/or a cyanobacteria called the 'photobiont'.

I had absolutely no idea of the complex nature of lichens until I tried to get an identity for the type I find in my locale. I actually was not able to label those that the picture portrays, but came to have a much greater understanding of their importance.

Well your note explains one reason why I am here on TN. As I research each post I come to learn from it and hopefully others from it when I post it (as I have from yours).

The sharpness and composition is good and I like the setting.

Very well done and thanks for posting.

Lichens are never very easy to name I would posably call it Rimelia sp. and I camn not even decide if the other is a moss or liverwart. I think I would have moved in closer
