[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This beautiful owl, (thanks to Lesley for identifying as a Great Gray Owl) was the perfect subject for me - unlike most other wild animals and birds. It let me snap a couple dozen pictures, including a small flight, while unafraid of me, the car door shutting and the camera clicks. The owl was obviously in hunting mode, as it kept a keen eye on the field seen in front of the owl. The small flight it took, was, I believe, an effort to scare any rodents that were hiding, into running.
My only wish was to have had my favourite lens - the 80-400 VR as it would have caputured a lot more detail.
It was a very cold day (Boxing Day), was about 1 in the afternoon, and was lightly snowing at the time.
White balance was set to Cloudy.
Had to auto contrast as the images were quite light.
I hope to add a picture of this owl in flight.

I like the shot Lissa,
I can imaging that you are sorrie that has forget the 400 lens otherwise you had made a great photo, thats for me a fact. But for a nice moment to be with that big owl. Look me very nice. I like your note, good job

This is a Great Gray Owl and I eny you seeing one...I am just a little too south of their range . Canada is having a great year for sightings of these lovely beasts! I like seeing it in it's habitat...nice capture.Gives a good idea of it's size...large!

Yes I like this shot Lissa, enough to try a workshop on it. A closeup on the owl is always very nice as they are magnificent birds but its nice to see this surrounded in its environment. Very nice.

This image shows how light these Big Owls are. Notice the size of branch he's sitting on.? Excelent capture of G.G. Owl

Mike

Lissa great capture , give a real feel for the hughe size of this owl and it is well veiwed here even on such a dull day, I think you have made the best of the equipment you had to hand well done.
thank you for the shooting details they do help other people learn thank you for Sharing.

You captured this great gray Owl in his environment. That's exactly the kind of area I got mine 2 days ago. Great post, nice picture. It happens to me sometimes not to carry the ideal lens and be face to face with THE subject. That's life. But you managed yours pretty well.
