3½-4". Male has bright rufous underparts and flanks, iridescent orange-reg throat. Female green above with rufous tinge on rump and flanks and much rufous in tail. Voice: an abrupt high pitched "zeee" and various other thin squealing notes. Found in mountain meadows, forest edges. 2 white eggs in a lichen covered cup of plant down and spiderweb attached to a horizontal branch. Aggressive and bold.
There are reports of these little birds spending the winter months in areas of southern British Columbia where people have kept feeders supplied with nectar.

Hi Walter, very attractive picture. Bright, great sharpness and nice pose here. I really like the way the colours come out, I think your background does a good job here.
WEll done, Reina

bonjour Walter,
je suis toujours admiratif devant ce genre de cliché en plein vol de ce petit oiseau; c'est un moment unique et la faute n'est pas permise.

Excellent capture Walter!
Easily good enough for National Geographic.
We used to see a lot of hummingbird shots on TN in the early days, not so many now.
This is as good as any I've seen.
Great work!

Really an exquisite hummingbird shot. Very sharp and detailed, the flash is not overwhelming. Was this really just 1/250second? The wings are almost completely frozen. I like the flowers dropping down from above and the hint of greenery. You did lose abit of the iridescence in the gorget with the flash, but I can't think of anyway that could be remedied without losing some other aspect of the shot. Very, very nice.

Nice colors
Excellent timing!
Good composition.
Good choice of using a high fstop!
Thanks for sharing. Clearest flight ones i've seen so far.

Superb capture, Walter. : )
I particularly enjoy the body curve and wing position on this one.
The uplifted beak exposes the beautiful colors on the throat.
Focus and exposure are spot on.
The colorful sharp flowers add to the lovely composition.
TFS. : )

Excellent réflexe pour cet oiseau qui semble suspendu à la fleur.
Bonne journée.

"Your Cat Name Man" is back with a vengeance :) to steal the title for best hummingbird shot on TN. Hey Walter, excellent dynamics you captured here!

Another one of your beauties, Walter.
I can't fault this except to add that a small disadvantage of flash is that the BG can be bit too dark, as if it were a night shot.
TFS, regards, Ivan

Hi Walter,
Like the other one on hummingbird, very good picture. Very sharp and good composition. I try a few times taking pictures of hummingbird with no good result. I look at the technical fact you give about using the flash, I'll try it.
Regards, Francois

Hello Walter ! Very nice picture of Hummingbird, it must be very hard to get a picture like this. Well done and thanks !

A beauty
Bird itself is gorgeous
Pic is crisp clear, brilliant colors, excellent POV, pose and composition. Good DOF.
1/125 would have give a little more motion blur on tip of wings and give a less frozen effect.
I love the pic the way it is anyway
