American Avocet
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Charadriiformes

Family: Recurvirostridae

Genus: Recurvirostra

Species: R. americana
The American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana) is a large wader in the avocet and stilt family, Recurvirostridae.

The Avocet has long, thin, gray legs, giving it its colloquial name, "blue shanks". The plumage is black and white on the back with white on the underbelly. The neck and head are cinnamon colored in the summer and gray in the winter. The long, thin bill is upturned at the end. Their adult size is about 18 inches (45 cm) tall.

Their breeding habitat is marshes, beaches, prairie ponds, and shallow lakes in the mid-west and on the Pacific coast of North America. They nest on open ground, often in small groups, sometimes with other waders. A pair will rear one brood per season, with both male and female providing parental care for the young.

They are migratory and most winter on the southern Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Mexico and the United States.

These birds forage in shallow water or on mud flats, often sweeping their bills from side to side in water. They mainly eat crustaceans and insects

Hi Rick, this is an interesting shot of a bird I have never seen before, but that's part of the reason we visit TN. The composition is great, you caught him with his mouth open. This in turn forces the observer (me) to read the note to understand what they would do with such a strange beak. Great colour and detail - you got the catch light.

Thanks, John

A lovely capture of this avocet with his beak wide open.
They have such super thin features, like those beaks and those legs. We have them here in the winter. They get very orangey in their breeding plumage.
Great pose and POV with sharp details and good light.
The busy BG is a bit distracting, but the avocet still shows well.
TFS. : )

Very nice! Excellent focus, colors, DOF and composition.

Very nice clean sharp image of the avocet. The details and coors are amazing in this wonderful capture. :)

Hello Rick!
very nice, colourful and well presented bird picture, with nice POV and good DOF. The only thing I do not like is the shadow - or really the lack of its part. It would be nice to keep it as entire - especially if the title is like this one :)
Anyway, nice and interesting bird, and the presentation is also interesting :)
Greetings,
Radomir

hi Rick!
