... aka Sunset over Grand Lake ...

This shot was taken on the first day this year when the < daytime > temperature in all the major centres in Canada was above freezing. That means we are starting to see the melting of ice...

In this shot we see what happens when rocks absorb solar energy, and as a consequence the surrounding ice starts to melt.

I took this shot just a few minutes after the sun had disappeared below the horizon, while there was still just enough light. The sky was glowing, and in turn reflected on the ice.

While taking shots along the shore of this lake < Grand Lake > I actually went thru the ice near its edge. Luckily the bottom was not too far below...

PS I put the original photo in the workshop area.
I hated to cut out part of the beautiful sky, but tried for the 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 type compo.

Hi Jay, very nice capture of the sun across the ice, producing excellent colours.

Guess this will mean an end to ice fishing soon. The ice will always melt first around those rocks, and shore (as you discovered). Something I noticed last year on the ice around those rocks is the change in the crystalline structure of the ice itself, almost as if there's a sublimation process as well as melting going on. It is very cool, and might provide an interesting shot.

Be careful out there.

Thanks, John

Hi Jay

This is truely superb! What an amazing subset!
The tones and all the colors here are brilliant and together with your exceptional exposure give this image such a pleasing and tranquill mood.
The melting ice in the FG gives very good attention to this segment and i must say that i love this composition here much better that the 50-50 one fro the WS. You did great to crop it! (plus it also get a better panoraminc effect).
The sharpness of the details everywhere is impeccalbe and the POV is excellent.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Jay,
Magnificent capture!
Besides the nice moment of the sunset got, It's really good and interesting the effect of the thermal energy absorbed by the rocks in melting the ice surrounding it.
And all that with the beautiful light present.
I think you made a great composition with all this elements.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,

Hello Jay,
Wonderful composition you have presented us with here first the dark trees on the shore almost seem to seperate two different worlds, the one above is fire with it's warm colors and feel. The one below is ice still cold and forboding with the grays and blues. OH OH I'm starting to sound like someone I know. Great job Jay.

Hi Jay.
Very expressive shot. Selection of shooting time is excellent as well as the correct cropping. Your note, as usual. is very interesting. The ice and sky reproduction is very nice. POV and DOF are selected skillfully too. My compliments and best wishes.

Hello Jay

A beautiful sunset and reflections. The ice doesn't take long to melt once it starts. We have many swollen rivers and streams here now.I like the atmosphere created in your shot. The patch of yellow sun above the treeline is very effective.Nice contrast between light and dark,TFS
