[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I found this little scene to be an attractive one when I went looking for mushrooms last Saturday. The exact mushroom ID is unimportant here, but they are in the Mycena genus, not sure which species, as we have a few species locally that look pretty much exactly like this and ID'ing them to the species level requires chemical tests and maybe a microscope. Anyway, this was intended mainly to be a pretty picture rather than a photo of a particular species of mushroom, so no precise ID help is required for this one. I also liked the lichen covering the log, a beautiful soft, green carpet with a few brilliant red fruiting bodies.

The light was harsh, bright sunlight which I softened by placing a collapsible diffusion screen toward the top of the image just out of camera range, really softened the light nicely. The camera was on a tripod and I used the delayed exposure mode to lock the mirror up for a couple seconds before the shutter opened to avoid mirror vibrations.

Edit: I added a workshop to show how these mushrooms looked without the diffusion screen, quite different. I like the much softer light that the diffusion gives.

Hello John, an eyecatcher for sure!
The image looks so real it's as though I could reach out and touch the tops of the little mushrooms and feel the texture of their delicate ribbed tops.
The difussion screen was a life saver in this instance, as I would have never have guessed that the light was harsh on this day.
Outstanding detail and perfectly exposed. White balance is right on the money as always. Well done!!
