[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was a very large female Black and Yellow Garden Spider. While on photo safari at the St. Louis Zoo with my buddy Scott Hale, we found her in the bushes inside the open air flight cage. She was just putting the finishing touches on wrapping up what ever had gotten tangled in that big web.

Black and Yellow Argiope
Argiope aurantia

The Black and Yellow Argiope is a common orb web spider. Orb web means it spins a web like a circle.

Female spiders are much larger than males, growing almost an inch and a half long. Males grow about 3/4 inch long. Both spiders have a cephalothorax (small front body section) with silver hairs on it. The abdomen (large back section) is egg-shaped with black and yellow coloring.

Legs of these spiders are black with red or yellow bands. Each leg has three claws on the end.

Black and Yellow Argiopes live in fields and gardens. They can be found on shrubs, tall plants, and flowers.

The web of this spider spirals out from the center and can be two feet across. The female builds the large web, and a male will build a smaller web on the outer part of her web. The male's web is a thick zig-zag of white silk. The slightly inclined orb web has a distinctive vertical zigzag design in the center (called stabilimenta). The exact purpose of the stabilimenta is not known, but it has been thought that it may aid in web stabilization, aid in the capture of prey, or prevent birds from flying through it.
The circular filaments of the orb web are sticky so that the spider may capture small flying insects such as flies, grasshoppers, crickets, wasps, and bees. This spider is diurnal (active in the daytime) and usually hangs head down in the center of the web.

If movement in the web is detected, the spider will often wave or vibrate the web in order to entangle the prey. Entangled prey is immediately wrapped with swaths of silk and bitten with fangs in order to subdue it.

Hallo Scott,
a perfect presentation of this spider and the scene with respect to light, colours and composition. Surface structure of the white 'dinner parcel' is well seen. Good non-disturbing background.
Best wishes, Peter

GREAT ! This macro is realy great. Sharpness and DOF are perfect, we can see well the Argiope and the prey on the special zigzag web over the soft background.
Bravo Scott and thanks for sharing this interesting moment.

Hi Scott,
Beautiful shot of this spider 'sitting' for dinner. I posted a shot of a very similar spider last week and your note has proved very helpful in identifying 'my' spider.
Well captured, with excellent lighting and pin sharp focus.

Great shot. Everything on focus. A lot to see here.
Well done

Brilliant composition and colors.
Title is a little inacurate as prey was already catched, wrapped up and then brought to the center of the web. The actual action is now only eating.

Hi Scott,
Great focus and interesting note.

Hello Scott,
Very nice capture with excellent light, color, DOF, and sharp details. Looks great/stands out very well from this dark green BG. The BG also serves nicely to highlight the spiders web..along with your great use of flash :)

Hi Scott, WOW! what an excellent moment captured. The spider in itself is amazing but to capture this moment is outstanding. Even the patterns in the web are superb. Very well seen and TFS.

Wonderful job. I shot this same spider last week and did not get the great results like you did. That's the difference between a "newbie" like me and you. The spider, the web and the pray are all clear, sharp and detailed. Again...nice job.
PS..Here in the South, we call them "Writin Spiders" :-D

Very good sharpness Scott. You show off the spider with his meal so well. As much as I dislike spiders I have come to enjoy looking at them here on TN - their colours and details are all so amazing - but don't tell Red Greg will you!!
Good shot, TFS

Hi Scott,
Or is he wrapping up a gift for your big B'day? :)

great capture, with excellent details and beautiful colors. You've captured a beautiful moment. How many times have I stood infront of a spider web waiting on some action. The OOF BG is beautiful and even brings out the web perfectly.

:) tomorrow

Hi Scott. Nice capture. Excellent use of flash.
If the photo has enough resolution, I would crop just a bit tighter.
It is a very beautiful spider and the web has great details.

Very well done Scott one of the best spider shot I ever saw. Trully beautiful, very artisticly done with a great technique. Thanks !

Just about the time I think you have posted your best stuff,(technically) you top it. Simply incredible detail here. You really used the available light to your advantage here. It was a pretty gloomy day and for you to walk away from this spider with thig dood of a shot amazes me. The OOF BG is superb and it really highlights the web. Super post, the "fang" comments almost gave me the "heebie-jeebies"! But it's nature and I have come to accept it! :)
Superb image, worth every point it get's (and then some)

Hi Scott,
This is excellent, a fantastic image. I think isolating against the dark BG has really paid dividends here, superb detail in both the web and spider. Great exposure and a well balanced composition. Excellent!

Hi Scott,

Wonderful! Spiders are not my favourite subject but this one is one of the best. I've seen many worse pictures taken with macro lenses. The details and sharpness are just incredible. They are inhanced by the very beautiful bokeh which also makes great contrast with the lighter colors of the spider and web. The composition, as in all your photos, is second to none. I can only admire such great work of art. Thanks!

Best regards,

Hi Scott,

You are an Outstanding Photographer! This is an amazing Macro, spot on sharpness. Fantastic lighting and the colours are so rich on this arachnid they just pop out of the photo. Amazing work! I can certainly learn a lot from you :) Thanks so much for the great notes, and the learning experience!
