Todays post is honor of my 50th birthday today. THE BIG 50!!! I am about as excited as this Grizzy Bear appears to be. So being on the down hill run now, I want to become the best photographer I can possibly be. I love the challenge of trying to get an excellent photograph under difficult conditions. Taken at the St. Louis Zoo with a very bright and sunny miday sun. I had loaned my 70-200 IS zoom and extender to my buddy Scott Hale, and I was just using my 180 macro lens without a tripod. I metered off the dark fur and adjusted slightly not to blow out the waterfall in the backround. I wanted just enough DOF and a slow enough shutter speed to blur the water, but not pickup minor motion blur on the bear. I moved several times and took numerous shots to get it just the way I wanted. I was pretty happy with this one. Getting it right in the camera means far less time in photoshop. Hopefully I made this bored zoo bear look like the majestic animal he really is.

Grizzly Bear - Ursus arctos horribilis

Grizzlies are immense bears, weighing up to 1,400 pounds. They eat both plants and animals, and are very adept at fishing for salmon and trout. They rely on their sense of smell more than their hearing or sight, and often stand on their hind legs to sniff their surroundings.

The grizzly is just one subspecies, or type, of brown bear (Ursus arctos). While grizzlies are confined to northwestern North America, other types of brown bears are found in Europe, northern Asia and Japan. The species as a whole is found in fairly healthy numbers worldwide (200,000 or more). But their Conservation Status hides the fact that many brown bear populations are in danger of extinction. This is certainly true of grizzlies. Once found throughout the mountains of western North America, habitat loss and hunting have reduced their numbers to only about 1,000 in the lower 48 states. For this reason, the United States Fish & Wildlife Service considers the grizzly bear (south of Canada) to be threatened with extinction.

Did You Know?
A grizzly bear can sprint 30 to 35 miles an hour over short distances -- faster than many horses.

Hi Scott,
I am glad you mentioned it yourself, because I was planning to let all know later today. Darn...
I've read all about the happy state you are in for already severall weeks and how you were so happy with the announcement from your good buddy Hale. Anyway...Happy Birthday and please don't act like a 50 year old grumpy man.

Great photo BTW with great details and lovely colors.

Happy half a century of achievement! Age is just a number, you are how you feel! Wonderful photo, brilliant composition and POV! TFS - Xplorator Radu

Hello Scott,
Good portrait of the big guy!
Very good facial details, and good lighting gives fine colours and details...
Good framing, and the strength of the animal comes well throught here!
Pablo -

PS - I wasn't going to mention the 50... But since all the others do... CONGRATS! Personally I prefer my age to be a non-subject, hehehehe!

Happy Birthday... you got the exposure just right. Fine details, great comp. Have you put a bid in on walkers yet?

Hi Scott,
Happy birthday my dear friend! Your notes made me laugh when you say that you are as excited than this bear :))) What an expression on its face; I cannot qualified it but one thing is sure, he’s looking in the future :) You caught him with excellent details; this is a beautiful portrait of this impressive animal! Lightning, details and POV are very well done. This is a great picture for a great anniversary. Thanks and have a great day!,

Happy 50th Scott. What an age! And the poor grizzly looks like he's taken all your worries and years off you - so go out and celebrate!!
Good shot of the old bear, and I see he only has the odd grey hair around his left eye, so, can you beat that?

Hi Scott,

Wow, what a great potrait of this grizzly!
I was lucky to see a couple of grizzly's on my vacation this year in Canada, in the Rockie Mountains. But I couldn't get this close to them to take a shot like you did here.
If I did I proberly wouldn't be so lucky anymore, or even got the chance now to look at your picture.......:-)
But on a serious note, I love this shot, great job!
And a very happy 50th birthday to you!

Greetings, Nel

HI Scott,

Very well done & Happy B-day my senior-citizen-to-be friend ;-}}
PS - Enjoy your 50's..I am!

Hello Scott,

First of all, happy birthday to you! I wish you a lot of excellent pictures like this one during the following year! The look of that bear is amazing! You managed excellently the exposition in order to show all the brown taints of the fur. You also did a great composition!

Happy Birthday, Scott. A lovely model for 50 -- big and macho! Great details in the shot, especially that hair. I like the subtle lighting, too. My only nit is that my eye keeps getting drawn to the pattern (waterfall) behind, and I keep thinking it seems tilted.
P.S. Enjoy your photography vacation. I look forward to more great shots.

Hello Scott

Happy birtday to you. Great post for this day - looks like he is still going strong as well as you hopefully are. I really like the tight cropping/composition. Great sharpness and very well blurred background. It really does not look like a zoo-picture. Well done.

May you last for many year ahead and give us a reminder when it comes to the 100 years;-O).

Happy birthday. Lovely shot. I saw some grizzly bears in the wild when I went to canada but they moved to quick to get photos (they run as quick as a race horse). Beautiful details and great composition

Happy birthday Scott! Half century!
Nice protrait to celebrate, hard light conditions are not the best but the details and melancholic bear face are the best.
Enjoy the rest of the day with happiness.

I didn't mention your B-Day because I thought you wanted to keep in the "down-low"! (I have never used that phrase before) Congrats on your 50th and congrats on this beautiful handheld shot. Lot's of detail with a perfect background. This sure makes this bored fella look great. You metered the browns perfectly because the water was so bright, good idea.
And NO....I won't have the staff at Bully's sing a B-Day song to you...I promise! here's to another 30-40 years or so.

Hi Scott,
Happy 50th birthday to you, my friend. : )
You did an outstanding job of capturing the wisdom and equanimity of this imposing animal. He does not seem bored to me. He knows his place in the scheme of things, and commands respect... as a person of your ripe old age should. : P
Kidding aside, enjoy your special day, and your special decade!
Best wishes,

hi! I would never want to meet this bear in the wild. Reality Tv said bears cause the most damage of all animals on earth! Are they a respectable authority or not???? He is gorgeous!

Hi Scott
'Rather late than never' is a weak excuse, I know, but it's the best I can offer at this moment and time. I am still walking circles around my PC with very limited or sporadic TN activities, but tonight I said to myself: "Self, it's about high time to shake off this comatose state and nail a couple of critiques on the wall". Well, eventually I got to your portfolio, only to find I missed out on your golden birthday and to crown it, I am all out of smileys. So, no birthday presents as yet, but I'll be back for sure.
You managed perfectly to capture the enormous size of this bear. A big bear hug for your big moment. Congratulations on your birthday my friend and may the 2nd 50 be loaded with exotic insects, amazing animals, idyllic sunsets, and the most pleasant photographic outings and expeditions.
This is a great photo and I just love it to bits. The frame filling composition is excellent. Perfectly natural colours and amazing details makes this bear comes alive on the screen. The DOF is brilliant and it was well worth your effort, the BG is alive, and the exposure was masterfully controlled. I must confess though that I am slightly baffled by the ‘Exposure Time’ (shutter speed) as reported by your camera. I have never seen these values (447392/44739201 sec) before. It works out to 1/100.00000223517631070738859881267 sec. Huh! I don't think even the sophisticated Hubble telescope can calculate time that precise.
Anyway, quality work my friend and TFS.

Though I'm late: Happy Birthday, Scott!
Nice shot of this grizzly bear. Excellent exposure, details and sharpness. Well composed.

Hi Scott.
I celebrate your 50th birthday first. On a birthday, normally, people give some gifts to birthday-man but this time you have given us a gift: This perfect, amazing wonderful bear portrait photo. Congratulations and thanks for sharing this beauty. With my best wishes.
Sincere greetings from Turkey.

Hello Scott,

Hi Scott,
Superb shot of this huge looking fella. A nice posture you've captured and nicely framed. Great detail and good exposure to a) capture the detail in the bear, even in the darkest areas and b) to capture the waterfall in that way. A good note too, great to read not only about the bear but also about the way you approached this shot and your though process. Great work.
