This is a Cloudless Sulpher Butterfly that I shot at the St. Louis Zoo Insectarium. It was a rainy and overcast day, so the butterflies were not to active. This allowed me to really take my time and set up for a few decent shots. A fill flash set to -1 exposure was used. Tripod and cable release. I was fairly happy with the overall sharpness, composition, and backround on this one.

Cloudless Sulphur
Phoebis sennae (Linnaeus, 1758)

Family: Whites and Sulphurs (Pieridae)

Subfamily: Sulphurs (Coliadinae)

Identification: Upper surface of male is lemon yellow with no markings. Female is yellow or white; outer edges of both wings with irregular black borders; upper forewing with dark spot in cell. Lower surface of hindwing of both sexes with 2 pink-edged silver spots.

Life history: Males patrol with rapid flight, searching for receptive females. Eggs are laid singly on young leaves or flower buds of host plants; caterpillars eat leaves and rest on underside of leaf petioles.

Flight: Many flights year around in the Deep South; may have one flight in late summer in other southern states; immigrants to northern states in August or September usually do not reproduce.

Wing span: 2 1/4 - 3 1/8 inches (5.7 - 8 cm).

Caterpillar hosts: Cassia species in the pea family (Fabaceae).

Ricardo

Another lovely macro Scott with a purity color and enviable sharpness.
In spite of the use of the flash, they are not perceived neither have more than over exposure neither reflect some, with very appropriate OOF of the bottom the same as the framing that you chose.
With admiration... Ricardo

This is the most beautiful Cloudless Sulphur I have ever seen on TN, Scott.
In addition to capturing the unique beauty of this butterfly, you have also presented an example of your very high technical skills as a nature photographer.
Sharpness, colors and details are simply mind-blowing.
Thanks for sharing this absolute stunner.

Hi Scott.
What a nice colour palette of your shot: burning yellow tone and restrained dark tones of the BG. I also like the perfect details of the butterfly, nice composition of the shot and very expressive captured scene. Perfect done and TFS.

Hi Scott
I actually can't remember when last I have seen a real life butterfly. About a year ago, or was it two, in Botswana in the Kgalagadi Park.
This one came out great. Its nice to see someone take their time to set up a really great shot. The detail is superb.
Thanks for the note (Iprint them) and for sharing.

Hi Scott,
Very beautiful shot.
The BG is not 'too' dark; often you don't see this using flash.
You managed the tool very well.
I like the details in the wing; it makes the picture great.
Great work!

Well done Scott.
I think the exposure and color is perfect. I like the composition, and I find the curly stuff adds interest :)
Great detail/sharpness @ 1/15th as well.
PS - Thanx for the all the fire you've been sending my way. When I was a kid, it was my second choice (Fireman) ;}

Looks perfect to me, Scott. Great details on the 'fly. Great compo, too, and I agree with Howard about the curly things adding an additional dimension. The flash fill at -1.0 works perfect for me -- it doesn't blow out all the natural light (it seems to be from the right side, and it seems to be most visible on the other wing). It makes for some nice complexity on the lighting!

Hi, Scott.
This butterfly looks very nice. I think mainly beacuse of excellent technical quality.
Exposure and sharpness on butterfly are perfect.

Hi Scott,
such a beauty, I love this sunny yellow colour and the perfect sharpness.
Thanks and greetings
Sabine - wishnugaruda

Sheez, the curly vegetation certainly adds some texture to this image. I love the yellow of the butterlfy and the detail of his legs.
I think this shot would look GREAT in your ever growing portfolio. Once again, superb work.

So crystal clear and beautiful! This butterfly is astonding to see so close, the rich color, tinest detail!

Hi Scott!

Just fantastic work! So yellow butterfly made great contrast with dark BG. Perfectly clear and detailed. Surface of its wing looks superb. Every vein and spot is visible. Congratulations!

Hello Scott,
the Sulphur stands in perfect contrast to a grey background with intesting structures of vegetation that are by no means distracting but well imbedding and telling the habitat.
I like the clear composition, the equally clear colours, and the excellent well focussed details within a most pleasant falloff in sharpness at foreground and background.
Thank you! With best regards,

Hi Scott

This is such a cute and fashionable little butterfly with its yellow socks and designer outfit.

A wonderful and pleasant photo presented in a lovely composition. The colours are stunning and well saturated, the details are razor sharp, the dark BG makes this little insect come to life, and the lighting / exposure was masterfully managed aided by the fill-in flash to paint out all the darkness on the subject.

Very well done and TFS.

Great job, Scott. Beautiful.
