This is another shot that I took at the Insectarium located at the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis, Missouri. Most people would recoginize this beauty in the open wing spread, but to me it is every bit as beautiful on the bottom side. Just not as colorful.

This was shot in Raw format in the landscape framing. I was able to crop into it enough to create this vertical composition. Although I bracketed some shots and tried some fill flash, the light quality was so good here that the non-flash shots looked slightly better. Adjustments in levels and curves to correct tonal balance and darken the backround slightly more.
Smart sharpen filter, and then a trip thru Neat Image Pro to reduce the noise.

Common Name: Orange Julia
Scientific Name: Dryas julia
Native Location: Southern USA South to Peru

If you want to see one with the open wings, I have posted a workshop photo. The female in the open wing pose is past her prime and has started to show some wear and tear.

Thanks for looking

Scott

Pretty sweet mf!

Yea, a 400 and maybe a 105 macro...;-( Ya think!...;-)

I got a new tripod today that came with a spare "quick release" boot that also fits in the one that I lost the boot for. So, I reckon I have a backup. Do you use a remote whenever you use your tripod?

Man, this "Lovely Miss Julia" is really nice! You are going to be competing with Howard soon if you keep this up...;-)
He will always give us a run for our money though, I believe...

POV and composition is simply excellent here!

Thanks & TFS,

Dave

Hello Scott,
This is a show of beautiful wing. Good layout with correct light adjustment. Great sharpness with details clearly seen. TFS this brilliant picture.

Amazing details, such sharp focus! Outstanding colors and great POV. The nice dark green background really makes the butterfly stand out! Great idea to show open wing in workshop.

That's an unusual pose for this butterfly, Scott.
A beauty indeed. What "tall" wings!
I like seeing the "ridges" on the wings. Different!
Great shot with lots of details and wonderful colors,
underwing notwithstanding.

Hi Scott!

Very different from our European butterflies. I like its high wings - great shape and nice red strip above head. Great POV and composition. Upper part of wing are slightly blurred, but it's ok. Very interesting post my friend!

Nice shot Scott, really detailed and with a great atmosphere.

Yes a very different perspective on this species, I like it. Good PP work and well explained. Not enough of us do it anymore on this site, yet when I joined it was the highlight of critiquing, learning what other did to 'improve' the basic shot. TFS.

What a superb butterfly! I envy you so much for having an insectarium close-by...we don't have such a thing here :(
Anyway, judhing by both of the shots present here, i would say it is just as lovely one both sides. I raelly like the colors of the wings but also the ones of its eyes.
The POV here is great, the details nice nad sharp adn the contrast with the BG excellent.

Ricardo

Clear, delicate and attractive macro Scott with right vertical presentation.
I like a lot the sharpness and the captured colors, due to an appropriate control of the light, in spite of the slow shot speed.
The details and until the textures they are really wonderful... with a perfect diffusion of the bottom to enhance the silhouette of the insect and their hanger.
I like also the framing that you chose for their composition and the excellent second image with the completely extended butterfly.
Thank you and until the next one... Ricardo

Scott, this is great.

I like the dark bg that leads to a very nice contrast.

Great composition and pov.

I enjoy your note too.

Hi Scott,
An excellent macro, shows nice details and texture in these odd wings. The BG is dark and not help much to see the antennae. good compo.
Cheers

Hi Scott,
Very neat image of this beautiful butterfly. Nicely composed too! Colors are great.
Excellent shot and great PP works.

Ben Lakitan

Well done Scott.
Excellent exposure, color, POV, detail, and composition. Really stands out well from your BG as well. Well focused with acceptable DOF fall-off..Those b-fly houses are not photographer friendly places :))
Have a great day.

I have seen the open wing stance in the workshop and I feel that this profile view of the underwing has greater appeal to me. That long vertical sweep of the wing plus those bold strokes of colors at the base of the wing make this aspect much more fascinating.
Your PP work for this presentation is immaculate and leaves no scope for nit-picking.
Warm regards,
Ram

Hello Scott,
You are right, miss Julia is lovely ! The butterfly stands out from the nice background. Exposure, sharpness and DOF are excellent. The composition is simple and smart.
Well seen and well done my friend !

Hi Scott
Very beautiful. The wings are stunning. They seem almost grainy, like wood.

Well cropped to make a nicely composed picture with a pleasing diagonal flow across the length of the picture leading to your subject.

Everything is sharp and the detail is great. But then, I feel almost embarrased to say that, because it always is on your photos.

Regards and well done. And TFS
