Many times Sparrows are overlooked by the casual bird watcher as they are not aware of the many species there are. When they hear the word "sparrow" they think only of the very common ( in the US) House Sparrow . I think another reason Sparrows get overlooked is their coloring is subtle and not brilliant like the Bluebirds, or Cardinals, or Gold Finches, but for me they are very beautiful and unique and many have a song that rival the gods!

We only see the American Tree Sparrow in the winter months as it breeds in Canada and Alaska in the summer months. It's rufous head and black spot in the middle of it's breast are easy and quick ways to ID this pretty Sparrow. It also has a very sweet song. The beak is also distinctive as well with the upper being dark and the lower being golden yellow. And don't ya just love the black clad legs...sort of like a burlesque dancer!

Very good sharpness & detail Lesley! Great exposure, color & POV..Has a definite "winter" look to it.. Well done!!

Sparrows are neat to observe. They are interesting bird. We have many kinds and some are weird looking.
This is a very good winter shot of the T sparrow showing his distinctive markings. The use of DOF on the bird is just right. Excelent POV as well. A natural looking shot with the branches and a nice background. Good eye.

Very nice shot Lesley. I like the composition with this beautiful bird. Good colors and sharpness with great details. Good job.

Beautiful shot Lesley as always, sharpness and colors are great and you're right, we tend to forget the common birds we see everyday. There are a lot of talents from all over the world on TrekNature and we see it on a daily basis. Keep posting them, they're always a treat.

Great shot, Lesley! Very good composition, color, DOF. And I agree with what you say in your note. Beautiful image of one of the most frowned-upon bird species of our countries. P.S. I went to see your other pictures. They are really superb!

Très belle oiseau. Le POV et DOF parfait. Un belle éclairage et le sujet est nette. Le background est super et s'harmonise bien avec l'oiseau. Félicitation pour cette belle composition.

I love the razorsharp details combined with the blurred BG. Great colors and wonderful, razorsharp details. I love tree sparrows. :)

Nice and clear as usual Lesley. the grey background works well with the brownis on the sparrow and it is very pleasant to look at. I do not know how hard you have cropped the picture but I think this one work be great too in landscape mode 3:4 with the sparrow in the upper left third.

I think we only have the house sparrow and two other species, equally "not colorful" down here. This one has a lovely color and the sharpness is your usual excellence. Great shot!
