Characteristics; The tricolored heron is about 22 inches in length and has a wingspan of about 3 feet. It has slate blue feathers on most of its body, except for a white chest and belly and a rust-colored neck. It has long yellow legs; a white stripe that runs up its neck; and a long, pointed yellow bill that turns blue during breeding season. Males and females look alike.

Life Cycle; The nesting territory is selected by the male. The female lays three to four eggs on a nest of sticks placed on a bed of reeds or in a tree. Both the male and female build the nest and incubate the eggs. The chicks hatch in about three weeks. Both parents care for the chicks and feed them regurgitated food. The chicks fledge in a little over a month. So this lil guys is a lil over a month old; amazing

This photo initially was overexposed due to the photo taken at high noon. Played with it digitally with High Def by taking several exposures and fusing them.

This lil guy was spied in the wetland reserve and can be seen in the video on my blog site if you would like to view the habitat :0) ENJOY My grandson tries to pet a WILD Cormorant! It was very hot this day and wildlife was a lil lethargic or else just not afraid of us, surreal moments captured

Hello Brenda,

Very nice capture. I would like to have seen the tail included! Assume you didn't just crop it out ... but did well in getting this POV of the bird? TFS

Hello Brenda,
This is one heron that I haven't had the pleasure to view in the wild, therefore I'm glad that you posted this shot.
Looks like you were right on top of this little guy as he decided to pose for you. I really like the white markings on it's chest and belly and those big beady eyes. Your blog is nicely arranged and very interesting.

Hallo Brenda
Thanks for introducing me to this bird that I now see for the 1st time. Although this one is still immature it has beautiful plumage details and the colours are also very eye-catching, and I am sure it would be a striking bird when it matures. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
