Ok after lots of research this lil guy is officially a night heron! This is what i found out; , it will take about two years and numerous molts for it to look like an adult. The crown will gradually get darker and darker over time.

Blackish feathers can appear gray because of this powder down. These feathers are small, specialized downy feathers that grow continuously and are never molted. Their tips disintegrate into tiny particles of keratin forming a very fine powder somewhat like talcum powder. This powder is slightly oily, and adheres to the feathers.

Only a few families of birds have powder down herons, parrots, tinamous, and bustards and it is thought that the powder helps with waterproofing and feather care, absorbing mud or other foreign substances on the feathers so that it is easier for the bird to preen away.

Here is a link for future reference powder down and the Black Heron

Brenda, we are neighbors today.
I like your portrait of the Heron taken in mellow light of the day. Very effective POV, rich colors and precise focus, especially on the eye.
Thanks and regards.
