This was a grande surprise, walking one early morning and there was this beauty to my left. Was able to get quite a few shots of him before he swooshed away. I thought it was a Coopers Hawk , due to it's speckled chest, but thanks to a trekker we have discovered this beauty is a juvenile red SHOULDERED hawk!

red shouldered hawk

" Although similar in appearance to the juvenile Cooper's Hawk, the choice of perch, the shape of the underside markings and, crucially, the short stubby toes (which contrast with the long, bird-catching toes of the Cooper's Hawk) identify this bird as a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk Buteo lineatus. The juvenile Broad-winged Hawk is similar, but has a shorter tail" Thank you Nigel!

Hello,
This is truly fantastic Brenda. Superb and warm colors, great details, fantastically composed, wonderful POV and great DOF. Regards Siggi

Hi, Brenda
This is a lovely picture, with the bird caught in the low angled light that shows the details of its plumage to perfection. Although similar in appearance to the juvenile Cooper's Hawk, the choice of perch, the shape of the underside markings and, crucially, the short stubby toes (which contrast with the long, bird-catching toes of the Cooper's Hawk) identify this bird as a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk Buteo lineatus. The juvenile Broad-winged Hawk is similar, but has a shorter tail.
Best wishes, Nigel.

Brenda Stevens ... this ... is .... my choice of the century, girl ... you can be very proud of your late work! Keep walking !

Hello Brenda,
Great shot of this juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. Isn't it neat when another member can help in identifying your subject. I too would have thought it was a young Coopers, mainly because that it what we see here in Ohio. Thanks to Nigel and his close observations, we now can see the differences for future reference.
Perfectly captured Brenda, and definitely a gorgeous bird!!
Ron
