It was a moist morning; humidity thick as I was walking the preserve today. Not many humans which was a good thing, no heavy footing heard. It was then I spied this little grebe foraging for a morning snack. Actually he saw me first, looking right at me when i lifted my camera to shoot just before disappearing under the dank water. They are such shy "PODICIPEDIFORMES" from the family of PODICIPEDIDAE.

A small diving bird with a chicken-like bill, the Pied-billed Grebe is common on lakes and ponds across North America. It is rarely seen flying and prefers to sink out of sight when danger threatens. Now since it's so rare to catch them in flight, this will be my next private prayer, to be able to glimpse and share such a sight!

When studying their taxonomy discovered 5 more related species of Grebes!

A day in my past caught this gentle bird once and wrote a blog, you are welcome to see a slideshow of him, he was quite cute! grebe slideshow blog

Will add to the workshop the landscape where this creature lives and thrives and lets us glimpse their amazing abilities! An honor indeed to witness the activity captured. The moment is still with me :)

Hello Brenda,
What a great capture with such a neat looking reflection. I can almost hear the tiny plop as he dives under, only to come up a few yards away from where he disappeared. I'm glad you posted the other two images, especially the one showing the area you found this cute little bird swimming in.
I photographed my first Pied-billed Grebe this past spring and your certainly right about them being very elusive.

Hi Breanda,
superbe moment for your shot. Clear and sharp. We dont see the typical characteristics of the bird but the pose is perfect.
best regards and nice week
