Blue Mirror
Little blue heron Egretta caerulea

One of the most numerous herons in the Southeast, may be observed in large mixed concentrations of herons and egrets.

Three in one in this case: original, reflection and shadow ;-)

- habitat: freshwater swamps, lagoons, coastal thickets and islands
- eats fish, crustaceans, amphibians, insects and reptiles
- stands in shallow water and waits for prey to go by, then grabs it with its pointed bill
- Adults tend to forage alone, stalking the marshes for prey
- immatures tend to feed in groups
- range: breeds from New England south to Florida, also on the Gulf Coast north to Illinois, occasionally in Southern California and New Mexico. Winters on the Gulf Coast and on the Atlantic Coast north to New Jersey. Also found in the tropics.
- young unlike any other heron have an all white body plumage. They have a blue bill with a black tip and dull green legs. They stay white through their first year but start molting into the darkadult color in winter

Unlike the egrets, it has no fancy plumes and was thus spared by plume hunters.

Great shot of this little blue heron (which I have never seen in the flesh). Very sharp details... and I like teh intensity in his searching pose. Well done and TFS. : )

Nice exposure on this beautiful and well composed heron. This is exactly how I look when I'm hunting for a donut or some kind of snack in my pantry. :)

Beautiful, sharp photo. Have you tried cropping it some on all sides? I tried it and it really showcases the heron and the reflection.

This is very nice. Crisp and clear focus, rich blues, and a well caught reflection. I might have been tempted to clone out the patch of seaweed to clean up the image - but perhaps that would have made it too sanitary!
