Fisherbird’s Friend - I

On Sanibel you will find many accomplished feathered fisher”men”, accompanied by their “friends”.

The fishers, among them waders and pelicans, are very popular with their friends, who will happily tag along on a fishing trip and who are nice enough to make sure none of the flushed prey escapes and unnecessarily goes to waste.

Among these friends are various long-legged waders, especially small herons, and the gulls.
Though with the various waders the situation often reverses and the favour is returned.
I have not yet seen a gull helping out, but then this would require more legwork than a gull is suited for.

I have found a number of examples of this more or less cooperative inter-species behaviour, and will post them in this “Fisherbird’s Friend” series.

In this first one, a little blue heron is eager for any prey stirred up by a white ibis.

I really like the intensity and expression on the little blue heron. He looks very hopeful.
Interesting interspecies behavior you have explained in your note. I would be really curious to see more examples thereof.

The quality is amazing - perfect, but it is the subject that makes this picture so interesting.
The water looks as if it was covered with this layer of ice and the reflections look great.

All of the photos in this series is very interesting. I just love your portrayal of the co-opeative behaviour. I have not noticed it here, but will be on the look out for it know. Great depth of field and the exposure is great. Love this.
