This was taken on my recent road trip to Florida. The J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. It is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations. One trip through the refugee and you may spot 50-100 different species of birds. This was taken at low tide as this Yellow Crowned Night-heron tries to pick his way along the edge of the exposed Red Mangrove Tree roots.

A very cloudy and windy day. I had rented a 300mm f4L IS lens for this trip, and added my Canon 1.4 extender. Going here to photograph birds is an amazing experience. You need a minimum of 400mm of lens to reach out and fill enough of the frame. A 500-600mm lens and 2x extender is the choice of many pros that shoot here. I crawled down a bank and waded into the water to get close enough, and to obtain a lower POV for this shot. I used a mono pod to try and keep it steady. I though he was to far for my flash to add any light, so I just metered for the plumage and let the backround go darker.

Yellow-crowned night-heron (Nyctanassa violacea)

Hi Scott,
This is a fine action shot of an adult Yellow-crowned Night Heron hunting in its typical habitat.
This is pretty sharp and the main subject stands out well against the mangrove roots in a shot that is well composed.
Nice to see!
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Scott.
Thank you for detailed and very useful note. You really managed to capture a very nice shot. I like expressive scenery and excellent reproduced image of heron. Your low POV is perfect as well as the dark and rich colour tones and effective lighting (or exposure). BRAVO and my best regards.

Beautiful photo! I really liked your note about how you took this photo. This is my lens of choice too so that makes it even more interesting...

I like the composition and the low POV. I would have liked to read about the PP work in the computer and took the liberty to make a workshop, I hope you don't mind.

Best regards/Bengt

Excelente captura Scott con atinado foco y agudeza, además de los colores y la apropiada iluminación.
Me hubiese gustado ver algo más de la reflexión en el agua, pero desconozco las condiciones de la captura.

A great capture under difficult circumstances. The dark BG shows of the lighter plumage without impacting to much on the darker head. Well done.

I have to admire your dedication to get shots like this - I think I will stick to camping in -12C rather than wading into what looks like a mangrove swamp with rather a lot of camera gear!

That said, I'll never get pictures like this. I long ago stopped trying to photo birds of any sort unless a really good opportunity arose.

What strikes me about this picture is the colour of the legs. they blend in so well with their suroundings it is untrue, but I guess that is why the catch their prey.

Very nicely done & TFS

Hello Scott,
A good capture, and a lovely subject!
The bird stands out well on the background thanks also to colour contrast, great details in the plumage...
Well composed image, and I can't help wondering what he is staring at..!

Hi Scott

I cannot figure out if this bird is actually giving a step or whether it is clawing at the mangrove roots. Whatever, it is a great moment you’ve captured of this very focused and intend bird. There must have been a little fish or frog that got hold of its attention for it does not seem to pay you any at all.

A great composition with this low POV. I love the dark result of the mangrove BG that the exposure metering on the birds plumage has created. It really makes the heron stand out of the frame. The colours are great and the details are remarkable.

Excellent work and TFS.
